Christian Romero Named Argentina’s New Captain After Lionel Messi Era

Christian “Cuti” Romero has been named the new captain of the Argentina national team following the end of Lionel Messi’s international career. Head coach Lionel Scaloni has chosen the 28-year-old centre-back to lead La Albiceleste into a new football era.

Romero’s appointment was reportedly planned well in advance. According to Argentine outlet TyC Sports journalist Gaston Edul, Scaloni’s coaching staff had already decided on Romero as the team’s next captain months before the 2026 World Cup.

Messi retired from international football after the 2026 World Cup, while veteran defender Nicolas Otamendi also stepped away. With both senior leaders gone, Romero has emerged as the natural choice to take over the captain’s armband.

Experienced goalkeeper Emiliano “Dibu” Martinez will serve as vice-captain. Both players were key figures in Argentina’s recent golden era and will now take on greater leadership responsibilities.

Romero has played an important role in Argentina’s remarkable run of success. He was part of the squads that won the 2021 and 2024 Copa America titles, the 2022 Finalissima and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Known for his aggressive defending, physical strength and fighting mentality, Romero has established himself as one of Argentina’s most reliable defenders.
