Do you remember Philippe Coutinho? The Brazilian star once captivated football fans while wearing the Liverpool jersey with his surging runs from midfield, curling shots, superb dribbling, and long-range goals. Barcelona spent nearly €160 million to sign him in 2018, at a time when he was considered one of the most sought-after players in Europe. Yet, a few years later, he found himself without a club.

However, a new door is opening for the 34-year-old Coutinho’s career. Thanks to the initiative of his childhood friend Neymar, he is set to join the Brazilian club Santos. According to Brazilian media reports, Santos has reached an agreement with Coutinho, with the contract running until December of this year.

Neymar and Coutinho have been friends since their teenage years; they even played together in Brazil's youth teams. Now, Neymar has stepped up to support his friend during a difficult time. According to a report by *O Globo*, Neymar has publicly expressed his desire to see Coutinho at Santos, describing the prospect of his arrival as a "dream."

Santos also has a pressing need for Coutinho. Neymar had been a key figure for the team this season but has once again been sidelined by a right-thigh injury. Consequently, the team required an experienced player in the attack, and they have chosen Coutinho to fill that role.

Coutinho was once a major star at Liverpool, earning the club's Player of the Year award—voted for by both players and fans—in 2015 and 2016. However, his career suffered a significant setback after his move to Barcelona in 2018.

Barcelona had signed Coutinho as a replacement for Neymar following the latter's move to PSG, but he failed to live up to expectations at Camp Nou. He gradually lost his place in the starting lineup and subsequently joined Bayern Munich on loan. Although he later moved to Aston Villa on a permanent basis, he was unable to truly find his form there, and he later played in Qatar on loan. In 2024, Coutinho returned to Brazil to join his former club, Vasco da Gama—the team where he had spent nearly nine years before moving to Europe. However, this second stint did not go well; he scored only 17 goals in 81 appearances for the club. Although his contract was valid until June, he parted ways with the club as early as February of this year.

Since then, Coutinho has been without a club. His name barely featured in discussions during the recently concluded European summer transfer window.

Now, the Brazilian star has an opportunity for a fresh start with Santos. Will we see the return of the old Coutinho playing alongside Neymar? Football fans are eagerly awaiting the answer.
