‘GOAT Debate: Closed’: Why Lionel Messi’s Instagram Post Is Making Headlines
Just days after announcing his international retirement, Lionel Messi has sparked fresh debate on social media with a special video posted on his official Instagram account.
The video has once again brought football’s biggest long-running question into the spotlight: who is the greatest of all time—Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo?
The clip ends with a long printed receipt. But instead of listing food and drinks, the receipt features highlights, statistics and achievements from Messi’s remarkable career with Argentina. The final line delivers a clear message: “GOAT Debate: Closed.”
The video is part of Michelob ULTRA’s “Tab Closed” advertising campaign. It shows a bartender printing an unusually long receipt filled with moments from Messi’s international career rather than a conventional restaurant or bar bill.
Among the details featured on the receipt are Messi’s 207 appearances and 125 goals for Argentina, along with references to memorable moments from his international career, including his iconic goal against Mexico and the numerous records he has broken.
The campaign also highlights three of Messi’s biggest international achievements: his Copa America triumphs in 2021 and 2024, as well as Argentina’s 2022 FIFA World Cup victory.
The World Cup triumph in Qatar was particularly significant for Messi. After years of near misses, the Argentina captain finally lifted football’s most coveted international trophy, completing one of the biggest missing pieces of his extraordinary career.
That achievement further intensified the debate over Messi’s status as the greatest footballer of all time, with Cristiano Ronaldo remaining his biggest rival in the discussion for almost two decades.
The Messi-Ronaldo rivalry reached its peak during their years at Barcelona and Real Madrid. Their battles in La Liga and the Champions League became some of the most closely followed individual rivalries in football history.
Messi and Ronaldo have faced each other 36 times across club and international football. Messi’s teams won 16 of those matches, Ronaldo’s teams won 11, while nine ended in draws. Messi scored 22 goals in those meetings, compared with Ronaldo’s 21.
For Argentina, Messi finished with 207 appearances and 125 goals. Ronaldo, meanwhile, has scored 146 goals in 233 appearances for Portugal.
Ronaldo has the edge in Champions League titles, but Messi’s World Cup triumph gave his supporters another major argument in the GOAT debate.
Now, through a creative advertising campaign, Messi appears to have delivered his own verdict. The final words on the receipt—“GOAT Debate: Closed”—have once again sent social media into a frenzy.
Whether the decades-long Messi-Ronaldo debate can ever truly be settled remains a matter of opinion. But one thing is certain: Messi’s latest Instagram post has given football fans plenty to talk about once again.
