Haaland Double Seals 2–0 Win Over Porto as Manchester City Start Champions League Campaign in Style

New season, new manager—but the same old goalscorer. Erling Haaland scored twice as Manchester City defeated Porto 2–0 to make a winning start to their Champions League campaign.

It was City’s first Champions League test under new manager Enzo Maresca following the end of Pep Guardiola’s long reign. The challenge was always going to be significant, but City showed little sign of pressure in their opening European outing, controlling much of the game from the start.

Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa, however, kept Haaland quiet during the first half. He produced an excellent save to deny the Norwegian striker’s powerful header before frustrating him again with two more impressive stops.

Despite City’s dominance, the opening 45 minutes ended without a goal.

Haaland did not have to wait long after the break.

Early in the second half, the striker rose to meet Enzo Fernandez’s cross and sent a header towards the bottom corner. It was not the most powerful effort, but it caught Costa off balance and rolled into the net to give City a 1–0 lead.

The goal finally sparked Porto into life. The hosts began pushing forward and created moments of uncertainty in City’s defence. Gianluigi Donnarumma was once involved in a potentially dangerous incident after rushing out of his goal and bringing down Pepe. Had there been no offside, Porto could have had a strong claim for a penalty.

Donnarumma was also fortunate when one of his clearances struck William Gomes and narrowly avoided turning into an own goal.

City nevertheless remained in control and eventually sealed the victory deep into stoppage time. Ryan Ait-Nouri delivered a precise cross, and Haaland calmly finished to make it 2–0.

The second goal took Haaland’s Champions League tally to 59 goals in 59 appearances. He already holds the competition’s fastest records for reaching 20, 30, 40 and 50 goals and is now just one goal away from another remarkable milestone.

Haaland also reached another landmark for Manchester City. His second goal was his 167th for the club, moving him into third place on City’s all-time scoring list.

After the match, Haaland highlighted the importance of handling the pressure that comes with playing on the biggest stage. He said the team’s task was to manage that pressure and do its job—and City did exactly that in Porto.

For Haaland, the importance of Champions League victories is simple: dropping points can quickly increase the pressure.

Under a new manager and with a new season ahead, Manchester City have made a statement in Europe. And once again, their biggest difference-maker was the familiar figure of Erling Haaland.
