However, the controversy began after Charles' departure. TV replays showed that Simmons' ball was actually a no-ball. When the matter was sent to the third umpire, Carl Tackett, he changed the on-field decision.

The problem was that by then Charles had left the field and gone to the dressing room. According to the laws of cricket, a batsman cannot be brought back after leaving the field after being wrongly out. As a result, tension arose between the two teams over the umpires' decision.
