Lewandowski's 41-goal record is 'mission impossible' for Kane: Hamann

Robert Lewandowski has proven that records are made to be broken - a popular saying in sports. The Polish striker of Bayern Munich scored 41 goals in the Bundesliga in the 2020-21 season, breaking the long-standing record of German football legend Gerd Muller of 40 goals in a season.

Now, Harry Kane is in the discussion as a possible contender to break that record. The English striker has been scoring goal after goal since joining Bayern, leaving Tottenham's long trophy drought behind. His goal tally in the Bayern jersey is 146 in 149 matches. He has also won the Golden Boot for three consecutive seasons.

Kane has already scored 98 goals in 95 matches in the Bundesliga. However, he has not yet reached Lewandowski's record of 41 goals. Despite scoring 36 goals in two seasons, he is four or five goals away from the record.

According to former German midfielder Dietmar Hamann, there is no question about Kane's ability. But the busy schedule of modern football could be the biggest obstacle in front of him.

In an interview with Goal, Hamann said, "Can he or not? Of course he has that ability. But I don't think he can."

Hamann explained that to break a big record like 41 goals in a season, Kane will have to play at least 30 to 32 full-time matches in the league. But while Bayern's main goal is success in the Champions League, the club will not take the risk of playing Kane regularly in the knockout stages.

Especially if there are important matches like the quarter-finals or semi-finals of the Champions League ahead, it is normal to rest Kane in the less important matches of the Bundesliga. If he does not play in a few more matches, it will be difficult to reach the 41-goal milestone.

However, Kane has the opportunity to touch another record of Lewandowski. Lewandowski has won the Golden Boot five times in a row for Bayern. Hamann believes that Kane can also share that record if he is fit.

"If he is fit, he starts with 20 to 25 goals per season. Whatever he does after that is extra. I don't see any situation where he doesn't score 20 goals. And most of the time, that number is enough to win the Golden Boot," said Hamann.

Beyond that, Kane has the tough challenge of becoming Bayern's all-time top scorer. Lewandowski has scored 344 goals for Bayern. And the club's record is still held by Gerd Muller — 365 goals.

That means Kane will have to score goals for Bayern for many more years to reach Muller's record. Although his current contract is about to expire, there are reports of signing a new contract. Ultimately, it remains to be seen how far Kane can go towards Lewandowski and Muller's record from Munich.
