Oscar-Winner Susan Sarandon Says She Is Losing Film Jobs Over Pro-Palestine Views

Oscar-winning American actress Susan Sarandon says she has been losing film opportunities because of her outspoken support for Palestine.

The 79-year-old actress made the claim while speaking to journalists at the Venice Film Festival, where she was promoting her latest film, ‘The Echo Chamber’.

Sarandon said some people in the film industry have been avoiding her because of her views on the Israel-Palestine conflict. She also claimed that several film projects have recently been taken away from her.

“I’ve had several films taken away from me recently. Some agencies are still telling people not to hire me,” Sarandon said.

Despite facing professional setbacks, Sarandon said she continues to receive support and affection from the public. She also spoke about the United States’ role in the Israel-Palestine conflict.

According to Sarandon, public understanding of Palestinian history and the relationship between Zionism and US politics has changed significantly. She also said more people are now aware of the amount of financial support the United States provides to Israel.

Sarandon previously faced controversy in 2023 after attending a pro-Palestinian rally about a month after Hamas attacked Israel. Comments she made during the event sparked widespread criticism, and talent agency United Talent Agency (UTA) subsequently dropped her.

Sarandon is one of Hollywood’s most recognizable veteran actresses. She won an Academy Award for her performance in ‘Dead Man Walking’ and is also widely known for films including ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’, ‘Bull Durham’ and ‘Thelma & Louise’.

Her latest film, ‘The Echo Chamber’, is directed by Andrea Pallaoro. Sarandon plays a singer in the film who sets out to create a new album with a music producer recovering from drug addiction.

The film is competing for the Golden Lion, the top prize at the Venice Film Festival. The festival’s awards are scheduled to be announced on September 12.
