Saim Ayub's failure and Nasser Hussain's criticism: ‘Pakistan has disrespected Test cricket’

Saim Ayub had been in excellent form in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), even scoring a century in one of his three matches for the Jamaica Kingsmen. However, he was suddenly called up to the Pakistan Test squad. Upon returning to the Test arena for the Edgbaston match, the opener was dismissed for a duck in both innings. Following this failure, former England captain Nasser Hussain has criticized the Pakistan team management and selectors. In his view, by abruptly bringing a player into the squad in this manner, Pakistan has essentially shown disrespect to Test cricket.

Major changes were made to the Pakistan squad following the Lord's Test. Seven players were sent home, and head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul were dismissed. Of the seven new call-ups, five were awaiting their Test debuts. Yet, despite these sweeping changes, Pakistan—already trailing 2-0 in the series—faces the threat of an innings defeat in the Edgbaston Test.

Holding the team management responsible for the team's dire situation, Nasser Hussain told Sky Sports, "Pakistan's situation is going from bad to worse. Saim Ayub hasn't played a first-class match in the last 11 months, yet he was playing in the CPL just ten days ago. Flying him in from a completely different set of conditions and format to face the Dukes ball amounts to a lack of regard and disrespect for Test cricket."

Former England pacer Stuart Broad, also present on the show, agreed with Nasser. He said, "At the end of the day, it is the players who suffer. Saim got out for a duck in both innings; will he get another chance? I don't think so. Honestly, it wasn't the right decision to have him open the batting."

Nasser also spoke about the internal turmoil within the team. Criticizing the decision to send teammates home midway through the series, he said, "Even a bowler who had taken five wickets in the previous match was dropped. When seven players are sent home in the middle of a series, the team's core values ​​are undermined. Players begin to wonder: if the team shows no regard for my teammates, why should I play for the team?"

Pakistan's dismal state is also evident in the on-field statistics. After being bowled out for just 133 runs in their first innings, Pakistan saw England post a total of 453. Trailing by 268 runs, Pakistan were 52 for 2 at the close of play on the second day of their second innings. Pakistan have failed to reach the 200-run mark in any innings of this three-match series so far; consequently, cricket analysts believe a heavy defeat in the Edgbaston Test is inevitable.
