Selena Gomez Denies Fraud Claims in Wondermind Investor Lawsuit
Selena Gomez Denies Fraud Claims in Wondermind Investor Lawsuit
Hollywood star Selena Gomez has moved to distance herself from a legal dispute involving the mental health company Wondermind, with her lawyers strongly denying allegations of fraud and seeking to have her removed from the lawsuit.
According to reports from U.S. media outlets, Gomez helped launch Wondermind in 2021 alongside her mother, Mandy Teefey. Former business partner Daniella Pierson was also involved in the venture.
Several investors later filed a lawsuit alleging that they were misled for years about the company's management, assets and infrastructure. The investors claim they committed approximately $1.2 million to the company based on assurances and promises that were allegedly not fulfilled.
The lawsuit includes allegations of common-law fraud, breach of contract and securities fraud. Gomez, her mother Mandy Teefey and former business partner Daniella Pierson were all named as defendants.
According to the investors, Wondermind was presented as an ambitious mental wellness company with plans that included a mobile app, advertising partnerships and celebrity-driven content. They were also allegedly told that Selena Gomez would play an active role in promoting the company.
However, the investors claim that several of those plans were never fully implemented. They also allege that they were not properly informed about management problems and serious financial difficulties within the company.
The lawsuit states that investors later became aware of internal turmoil at Wondermind through reports published by Forbes and The Cut.
Gomez's legal team, however, has firmly rejected the allegations. Her attorney, Matthew S. Rosengart, described the idea that Gomez committed fraud or engaged in misconduct as unreasonable.
Her lawyers argue that the lawsuit does not identify any specific false statements that Gomez personally made to investors. They also state that she was never a member of Wondermind's board of directors and never agreed to take responsibility for managing the company.
Court filings further claim that Gomez did not hold even a minority ownership stake in Wondermind. Instead, she was reportedly engaged primarily as an adviser and served as the company's Chief Social Impact Officer.
Gomez's legal team has described the allegations against her as vague, general and contradictory. They argue that the claims fail to establish that she personally committed fraud or bears legal responsibility to the investors.
Legal documents indicate that Mandy Teefey and Daniella Pierson served as co-chief executive officers and board members responsible for running Wondermind.
The case will now depend on the court's decision regarding Gomez's request to be dismissed from the lawsuit. Her lawyers maintain that there is no sufficient legal basis to hold the singer and actress personally responsible for the alleged wrongdoing.
