Switzerland forward Noah Okafor has decided to step away from the national team, citing a breakdown of trust with head coach Murat Yakin as the main reason behind his decision.

Okafor was part of Switzerland’s squad at the World Cup in North America but saw limited action throughout the tournament. The Leeds United forward was given only 19 minutes in the round-of-32 match against Algeria.

However, the 26-year-old made it clear that limited playing time was not the reason behind his decision to leave the national team. Instead, he said several incidents had damaged his trust in the coaching staff.

“My decision has nothing to do with playing time. There were certain incidents that deeply hurt me. Trust was lost, and promises were not kept,” Okafor said.

He also revealed that the way the coaching staff reacted to some minor mistakes during his appearance against Algeria left him deeply disappointed.

“When I finally got the chance to play against Algeria, the way they reacted to some small mistakes far away from our own goal deeply hurt me,” he added.

The Swiss Football Association confirmed Okafor’s decision. A spokesperson for the association said, “Noah informed us today that he will not play for the national team for the time being. We respect his decision and wish him every success with his club.”

Okafor said he had spent the past few weeks reflecting on the situation before reaching his decision.

“Over the past few weeks, I have thought a lot about the situation. I have therefore decided that I do not want to play for the national team while the current coach is in charge,” he said.

Okafor also announced his decision on Instagram. While stepping away from international football for now, the Swiss forward is expected to continue his club career.
