US Summer Box Office Sets All-Time Record With $4.76 Billion

The US box office has reached a historic milestone, with the summer movie season generating a record $4.76 billion in ticket sales. The figure, equivalent to roughly Tk 57,000 crore, makes this the highest-grossing summer box office season in US history.

The record was set between May 1 and September 7, surpassing the previous summer record of $4.75 billion established in 2013.

That year, blockbuster releases such as ‘Iron Man 3’, ‘Despicable Me 2’ and ‘Man of Steel’ helped drive the US summer box office to its then-record level. Thirteen years later, that mark has finally been broken.

Four Consecutive Months Above $1 Billion

One of the biggest highlights of this year’s summer season was the unprecedented strength across four consecutive months.

May generated $1.07 billion, followed by $1.08 billion in June, $1.18 billion in July and $1.27 billion in August.

Hollywood generally considers the period from early May through Labor Day—the first Monday of September—as the summer box office season. Around 40 percent of the annual US box office revenue typically comes during this period.

Spider-Man and ‘The Odyssey’ Lead the Charge

The record-breaking performance was powered largely by major franchises, sequels and high-profile releases. Films such as ‘Toy Story 5’ and ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ performed strongly, while movies including ‘Obsession’ and ‘Backrooms’ also attracted younger audiences.

Sony’s Marvel release ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ emerged as one of the biggest contributors. The film earned around $923 million in the US and approximately $2.4 billion worldwide.

Christopher Nolan’s epic ‘The Odyssey’ also exceeded expectations. The film generated $589 million in North America and approximately $1.62 billion worldwide.

Second Post-Pandemic Summer Above $4 Billion

This marks only the second time since the COVID-19 pandemic that the US summer box office has surpassed $4 billion.

In 2023, the combined phenomenon of ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ helped push summer ticket sales to $4.09 billion. Before the pandemic, the 2019 summer season generated around $4.3 billion, boosted by blockbusters such as ‘Avengers: Endgame’.

There are, however, a couple of factors to consider when comparing this year’s figure with the 2013 record. The 2013 total was not adjusted for inflation, while this year’s summer season lasted 130 days compared with 123 days in 2013. The difference was partly due to the position of the Labor Day holiday on the calendar.

Even with those factors taken into account, the $4.76 billion summer box office is being viewed as a major positive sign for the US theatrical industry, suggesting a strong recovery in both audience demand and cinema revenue.
