Shoaib Akhtar Turns Down PCB Proposal, Chooses to Stay Away on His Mother’s Advice
Former Pakistan fast-bowling great Shoaib Akhtar has turned down a proposal from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), ending speculation that he could take up a senior role within the board.
Amid Pakistan cricket’s recent instability, the PCB had reportedly considered bringing the outspoken former pacer into an important position. There was even speculation that Akhtar could become the board’s chief selector.
However, Akhtar has now made it clear that he will not be joining the PCB. Speaking to PTV, he said he had decided to stay away from the board after taking his mother’s advice.
The discussions came against the backdrop of a difficult period for Akhtar and his family. His elder brother passed away recently, and PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi had met Akhtar during that time and offered his support.
Naqvi’s gesture reportedly had a strong impact on Akhtar, helping ease some of the bitterness from the past. Later, the possibility of Akhtar taking up a role within the PCB was discussed.
Akhtar, however, has denied reports that he recently met Naqvi. He said his recent trip to Houston, United States, was for personal reasons.
Despite the speculation surrounding his possible appointment, Akhtar has now rejected the idea of joining the PCB. For the time being, the former Pakistan speedster has decided to remain away from the board, following his mother’s advice.
His decision means the PCB’s reported efforts to bring one of Pakistan cricket’s most prominent former players into an official role will not materialise for now.
