Liverpool Edge Chelsea in Penalty Shootout Thriller to Reach Carabao Cup Quarter-Finals
Liverpool survived a dramatic penalty shootout against Chelsea at Anfield to book their place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.
The fourth-round tie finished 1–1 after 90 minutes, with both goals coming from the penalty spot. Morgan Rogers gave Chelsea the lead before Cody Gakpo equalised for Liverpool just three minutes later.
Neither side could find a winner after the break, sending the contest into a dramatic shootout. Liverpool eventually prevailed 6–5.
Rogers and Gakpo Trade Penalties
The match began with an intense end-to-end battle, but clear chances were limited during the opening half-hour.
Chelsea were awarded a penalty in the 38th minute after Ryan Gravenberch brought down Moises Caicedo. Morgan Rogers stepped up and converted in the 40th minute to put the visitors ahead.
Liverpool responded almost immediately.
Wesley Fofana was penalised for handball following a Liverpool corner, giving the Reds a penalty of their own. Gakpo made no mistake from the spot in the 43rd minute to restore parity.
The second half produced opportunities for both sides, but neither team could find another goal. The match therefore remained 1–1 and had to be decided by penalties.
A Shootout Full of Drama
The penalty shootout quickly turned into a test of nerves.
Both sides converted their early attempts before Chelsea suffered the first major setback. Valentin Barco struck the inside of the post and saw his effort bounce away.
Liverpool then had the chance to win the tie, but Kostas Tsimikas sent his effort over the crossbar.
Chelsea stayed alive, but the drama continued into sudden death.
After further successful penalties, Mike Penders saved Ryan Gravenberch’s attempt and handed Chelsea another opportunity to take control.
However, Emmanuel Emegha could not take advantage. The Chelsea debutant’s effort was brilliantly saved by Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.
Joe Gomez then smashed his penalty into the top corner to put Liverpool 6–5 ahead.
Everything came down to Wesley Fofana.
The Chelsea defender needed to score to keep the shootout alive, but his effort flew over the crossbar. Liverpool immediately erupted in celebration as their place in the quarter-finals was confirmed.
Liverpool Survive Another Cup Classic
The game had swung back and forth throughout the night. Chelsea had taken the lead, Liverpool quickly responded, and the shootout produced one twist after another.
Barco hit the post, Tsimikas missed, Gravenberch was denied, Emegha failed to convert and finally Fofana sent Chelsea out of the competition.
After 90 minutes, the score was 1–1. After 16 penalties, Liverpool had finally won it 6–5.
The Reds are through to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, while Chelsea’s League Cup campaign is over.
