Toufique Mahbub and Irfan Sajjad express grief over deadly resort fire in Ukhiya and raise concerns over fire safety

A devastating fire at TupTup Resort on Patuartek Beach in Inani, Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, has claimed 10 lives, including a child, leaving families and the wider community in mourning. Actors Toufique Mahbub and Irfan Sajjad have expressed their grief over the tragedy while raising concerns about the resort’s fire safety arrangements.

The two television actors shared their reactions on social media, highlighting the importance of protecting visitors and ensuring that tourism businesses maintain adequate safety measures.

‘This Has Broken My Heart’

Actor Toufique Mahbub expressed his sorrow over the loss of lives in the fire through a Facebook post.

Actor Irfan Sajjad also expressed deep sorrow over the incident, particularly the distress of a mother searching for her child following the fire.

In a Facebook post, Irfan criticised what he described as inadequate attention to visitor safety at resort businesses.

He wrote, “I felt like building a resort, so I built one! I started a business! And why should I even have to think about the safety of the people the business is meant to serve? The money keeps coming in! So far, 10 people, including a child, have died. How do these so-called resorts operate without even basic firefighting arrangements? I can’t bear the cry of that mother searching for her child.”

His comments highlighted the need to make visitor safety a priority rather than treating it as a secondary concern. He also questioned how businesses can continue operating without adequate fire protection measures.

Questions Over the Resort’s Fire Safety

The deadly incident has raised serious questions about the fire safety arrangements at TupTup Resort. According to Fire Service and Civil Defence Director General Brigadier General Sultanul Afreen, the resort did not have a Fire Service licence.

The deaths of 10 people, including a child, have renewed attention on fire prevention, emergency exits and visitor protection at tourist facilities.

The reactions from the actors reflect the wider grief and anger surrounding the tragedy. The incident also underscores the importance of enforcing safety requirements and ensuring that resorts and other accommodation businesses take effective measures to protect their guests.
