Bayern Munich Coach Vincent Kompany Hospitalised After Falling Ill
Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has been taken to hospital after falling ill during a training session in Munich. The 40-year-old Belgian is believed to have been recovering from a viral infection that affected him last week.
Kompany was watching Bayern’s second-team training session on Friday when he became unwell. He was taken to a Munich hospital with the assistance of an emergency doctor for further medical assessment.
German broadcaster Sky Sport reported that his condition was stable. Bayern, however, did not provide detailed information about his current health in its official statement.
In a statement posted on X, the club confirmed that Kompany required medical attention after becoming ill while observing the second team’s training session. He is undergoing further examinations and will remain under medical care.
Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl stressed that the coach’s recovery was the club’s priority.
“Kompany is receiving all the necessary medical treatment and support. He will be given all the time he needs to recover. We have full confidence in his coaching staff, and everyone at Bayern wishes Vini a speedy recovery,” Eberl said.
Viral Infection Affected His Preparation for Arsenal
Kompany had been suffering from a viral infection over the previous week. As a result, he missed Tuesday’s press conference ahead of Bayern’s Champions League match against Arsenal, as well as the team’s final training session.
Assistant coach Aaron Danks spoke to the media in his place, explaining that Kompany needed rest. Danks also mentioned that the Belgian had been experiencing pain in his foot.
Despite those concerns, Kompany was present in the dugout for Wednesday’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal.
Speaking about his illness before the match, Kompany acknowledged that his determination to oversee every aspect of the team had led him to ignore his body’s warning signs.
“I had a pretty bad virus last week. Even then, I didn’t listen to my body. At one point, my body told me: ‘Stop now,’” he said.
Friday’s incident suggests that he had not yet fully recovered.
Kompany’s Bayern Journey
The former Manchester City defender took charge of Bayern Munich in 2024 and has since guided the German club to Bundesliga success.
For now, however, Bayern’s immediate priority is Kompany’s health and recovery. The club has not yet provided a detailed medical update or announced when he might return to his coaching duties.
