Messi Finishes Fifth in 2026 Ballon d'Or: Full Rankings
Time changes, generations change and football's biggest stage keeps producing new stars. Yet Lionel Messi's name remains firmly among the elite.
At 39, after leaving European football for Major League Soccer, the Argentine superstar still finished among the top five players in the world in the 2026 Ballon d'Or rankings.
Harry Kane won the men's Ballon d'Or at the 70th ceremony in London on Monday night. Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappé finished second, Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal was third, Rodri came fourth and Messi finished fifth.
2026 Ballon d'Or: Full Top 10
Harry Kane — Bayern Munich, England
Kylian Mbappé — Real Madrid, France
Lamine Yamal — Barcelona, Spain
Rodri — Manchester City/Barcelona, Spain
Lionel Messi — Inter Miami, Argentina
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia — Paris Saint-Germain, Georgia
Ousmane Dembélé — Paris Saint-Germain, France
Erling Haaland — Manchester City, Norway
Michael Olise — Bayern Munich, France
Fabián Ruiz — Paris Saint-Germain, Spain
The remaining positions were Jude Bellingham 11th, Pau Cubarsí 12th, Achraf Hakimi 13th, Vitinha 14th and Declan Rice 15th. Vinícius Júnior finished 17th, Bruno Fernandes 27th, while Sadio Mané and William Saliba shared 29th place.
Messi Still Among the World's Best at 39
Messi's fifth-place finish is arguably one of the most remarkable aspects of this year's rankings.
The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner is now 39 and plays his club football in MLS with Inter Miami. Yet he remains ahead of several of Europe's biggest stars, including Kvaratskhelia, Dembélé, Haaland, Olise and Fabián Ruiz.
His 2025–26 season also included another major international campaign with Argentina. Messi remained one of his country's most influential players during the 2026 World Cup, adding another chapter to an extraordinary international career.

Who Finished Ahead of Messi?
Harry Kane topped the rankings after a remarkable campaign. The Bayern Munich striker scored 73 goals for club and country during the 2025–26 season and became the first Englishman in 25 years to win the Ballon d'Or.
Kylian Mbappé finished second, followed by Lamine Yamal in third. Rodri completed the top four ahead of Messi.
Yamal's third-place finish was particularly significant given his age. At just 19, the Barcelona star continues to establish himself among the leading names in world football.
Messi Finished Ahead of Several European Stars
Despite playing outside Europe's major leagues, Messi finished above several players who enjoyed outstanding campaigns in Europe.
PSG stars Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Ousmane Dembélé finished sixth and seventh respectively, while Manchester City's Erling Haaland was eighth. Bayern Munich's Michael Olise and PSG midfielder Fabián Ruiz completed the top 10.

That means Messi, at 39, still ranked above a number of players from Champions League-winning PSG and some of the biggest clubs in European football.
A Different Stage for Messi
Messi was not in London for the Ballon d'Or ceremony. Instead, he remained in Miami around the Messi Cup, a youth tournament featuring Under-16 teams and some of the game's emerging talents.
The contrast was striking.
In London, 19-year-old Lamine Yamal was strengthening his place among football's current elite. In Miami, 39-year-old Messi was watching the next generation of players develop.
One generation is rising while another legendary generation is slowly moving toward its final chapter.
Messi did not win the Ballon d'Or this time. He did not even attend the ceremony. But at 39, after leaving European football, finishing fifth in the world's most prestigious individual football award is another remarkable milestone in a career unlike any other.
