Suárez Return Rumours Grow as New Uruguay Coach Forlán Speaks Out

Could Luis Suárez be set for a return to the Uruguay national team? Recent comments from new head coach Diego Forlán have reignited that possibility. In his first press conference after taking charge, the former Uruguay star gave a notably positive response when asked about bringing Suárez back into the squad.

Forlán has been appointed head coach of both Uruguay’s under-20 and senior national teams until March 2027. Speaking about Suárez, he said:

“I have enormous respect and complete confidence in Luis. If he is ready, I see no reason not to include a player of his quality. He can score goals, he has tremendous experience, and he continues to prove himself every week. We will monitor the situation, but there is no question about his ability.”

Suárez Wants to Return

The 39-year-old forward is currently playing for Inter Miami alongside Lionel Messi. He had previously stated that he would be ready to return if called up again by Uruguay. Although Forlán admitted he was somewhat surprised to hear that, he responded positively.

“Honestly, I didn’t know he had said that. But if he is prepared, the door of the national team is always open for him.”

A New Direction After Failure

Uruguay’s recent years have been far from successful. At the recently concluded World Cup, Marcelo Bielsa’s side failed to win a single match and exited in the group stage. Suárez was not part of that disappointing campaign and has not played for the national team since 2024.

Forlán and Suárez share much more than a coach-player relationship. They were once one of Uruguay’s most successful attacking partnerships, playing together at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups and the 2011 Copa América.
