An Emotional Farewell: Lionel Messi Announces Retirement from Argentina National Team

The emotional moment has finally arrived. Lionel Messi, one of the greatest footballers in history, has announced his retirement from the Argentina national team.

The 39-year-old Argentine legend confirmed his decision in a post on his official Facebook page, bringing an end to an extraordinary 21-year international career.

Reflecting on his decision, Messi wrote, “After having so much time to think following the World Cup final, I want to let you all know that I am retiring from the national team…”

Speculation about Messi’s international future had intensified following Argentina’s defeat in the World Cup final in July. The Argentine captain had reportedly begun seriously considering retirement after the loss and wrote down his thoughts and emotions in a notebook.

Messi also shared an image of those handwritten notes on social media. Toward the end of his statement, he revealed, “I wrote these words on July 21, two days after the final. Today, after what happened to my father, I am more certain than ever.”

After losing his father on August 8, Messi became even more convinced that the time had come to step away from international football. The personal tragedy ultimately strengthened his decision to close one of the most remarkable chapters of his career.

Messi admitted that retiring from Argentina was an extremely painful decision.

“This is a decision that has hurt my soul and still hurts me,” he wrote. “But I understand that this is the right time. I swear to you that I have always given everything I had—not only during the years when we won everything, but long before that as well.”

The Argentine legend also expressed his deep love for the national team shirt and its supporters.

“I have always fought for this shirt, to bring you joy and to make you proud to be Argentine through football. I have always given everything,” Messi said.

Messi made his senior Argentina debut in 2005. Over the course of his 21-year international journey, the most successful chapter of his career began in 2021.

Between 2021 and 2024, Messi led Argentina to two Copa América titles, the Finalissima and the FIFA World Cup, finally ending years of frustration and criticism surrounding his international career.

However, the road to glory was far from easy. For many years, Messi faced criticism for failing to win a major international trophy with Argentina. After losing the 2016 Copa América final, he even announced his retirement from international football in disappointment.

But Messi eventually returned to the national team and went on to complete one of the greatest redemption stories in football history. During the latter stages of his career, he achieved everything that had once seemed beyond reach.

Messi was once again outstanding at his final World Cup. He set the record as the tournament’s all-time leading scorer and helped Argentina reach the final. He also explained that it was time to make room for Argentina’s next generation.

“There are many wonderful young players coming through who deserve their place in the national team,” Messi said.

Messi ends his Argentina career with an incredible record of 207 appearances, 125 goals and 68 assists. He is the all-time leading scorer in Argentina national team history. In international football, only Cristiano Ronaldo has played more matches and scored more goals.

After such a historic journey, Messi believes he has given everything possible to the famous sky-blue and white shirt. At the same time, he wants to make space for the talented young players who will carry Argentina into the future.

Messi also expressed his gratitude to his family, teammates and coaches.

“Thank you to my family for always being by my side and for accompanying me on such a beautiful but difficult journey,” he wrote. “Thank you to every coach, teammate and official I had the opportunity to work with. I will carry unforgettable memories and moments with me forever.”

In his final message to the supporters, Messi added, “I leave with peace and pride, knowing that together with my teammates we were able to give you moments that felt like dreams. Living these experiences with all of you has truly been something extraordinary. I love you all!”
