Barcelona 5-0 Elche: Dominant Start to La Liga Title Defence

Barcelona made a flying start to the new La Liga season, thrashing Elche 5-0 away from home on Sunday. The defending champions produced a dominant second-half performance to begin their title defence in emphatic fashion under Hansi Flick.

Barcelona were not at their fluent best in the opening half, despite scoring twice before the break. They finished the match with 52 percent possession and registered 11 shots, seven of which were on target. Elche managed seven attempts, with only two testing the Barcelona goalkeeper.

The visitors took the lead in the 14th minute when captain Raphinha converted from the penalty spot. The Brazilian forward had been fouled inside the box, earning Barcelona a penalty which he confidently dispatched.

Barcelona had an earlier opportunity in the seventh minute when Lamine Yamal broke into the box after controlling a lofted pass from Eric Garcia. With only the goalkeeper to beat, however, Yamal sent his effort over the bar from close range.

Elche's best opportunity of the first half came in the 35th minute, but Ali Juwara failed to make the necessary contact with a teammate's cross inside the box.

Barcelona doubled their advantage in the third minute of first-half stoppage time. Yamal found Raphinha, whose through ball reached Karim Adeyemi inside the box. The 24-year-old German winger produced a composed finish to score on his competitive debut for Barcelona.

Barcelona returned from the break with a much sharper attacking approach. In the 65th minute, Flick replaced Yamal and Adeyemi with Anthony Gordon and Dani Olmo. The changes quickly paid off.

Gordon played a key role in Barcelona's next two goals. In the 67th minute, Raphinha controlled Gordon's pass inside the box before scoring his second goal of the match.

Four minutes later, Gordon again played a decisive role. Rather than taking the shot himself, he squared the ball to Fermin Lopez, who calmly finished to make it 4-0.

Lopez completed the scoring in the 79th minute, controlling Esparte's pass outside the box before cutting inside and firing home his second goal of the night.

Gordon was particularly impressive after coming off the bench, providing two assists to help Barcelona secure a commanding victory. He also became the third English player in the past 100 years to feature for Barcelona's first team, following in the footsteps of Gary Lineker and Marcus Rashford.

The victory marked Barcelona's 11th consecutive La Liga win over Elche. With five goals in their opening match, Hansi Flick's side have sent an early warning to their rivals that they are ready to defend their league crown.
