Ed Sheeran opens up about leaving out Macklemore, says "I might be making a mistake."

Amidst the controversy surrounding Macklemore's removal from his 'Loop Tour,' Ed Sheeran has finally publicly stated his position. During a concert in Philadelphia, USA, on Saturday (September 19), the British singer remarked that he never intended to view himself as an "activist musician." However, the current situation compelled him to express his feelings.

Sheeran stated that he did not wish to assume the role of a political commentator in his career. To him, music and concerts represented spaces for unity and humanity. Yet, he views the situation in Gaza as a humanitarian crisis, and remaining silent on the matter has become difficult for him.

Why was Macklemore dropped?

The controversy stemmed from several stage performances by Macklemore in September, where he expressed support for the Palestinian people and spoke about the situation in Gaza and the West Bank. Organizers subsequently reported that several venues on Sheeran's US tour objected to hosting performances featuring Macklemore.

Sheeran had previously clarified that the decision to drop Macklemore from the tour was not his own. According to him, the decision was made by the tour's promoter, as Macklemore’s contract was with the promoter.

Objections from venue owners

Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts also raised objections regarding Macklemore's performance. Robert Kraft, the stadium's owner and the head of the New England Patriots, characterized Macklemore's statements as "hate speech." Meanwhile, Macklemore has stood by his remarks.

Following Macklemore's removal, several supporting artists also withdrew from the tour. Among them were Lukas Graham, Aaron Roe, Finneas, and the band Beoga.

"I might be making mistakes"

On stage in Philadelphia, Sheeran noted that while he is accustomed to accepting criticism regarding his music, the current controversy holds far greater significance for him.

He stated that he had to make difficult decisions and take tough actions this week. At the same time, he acknowledged his own mistakes and expressed regret to the audience.

Sheeran’s remarks on Gaza

On stage, Sheeran described the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, as horrific. Simultaneously, he characterized the ongoing situation in Gaza as "catastrophic" and "senseless." He also voiced concern regarding the loss of civilian lives—particularly the deaths of children—and the situation in the West Bank.

However, Sheeran admitted that his knowledge on the subject was limited. He stated that he is still trying to understand the issue and learning how he might contribute effectively.

I didn't know if the tour would go on

Sheeran revealed that the controversy surrounding Macklemore had affected him personally. At one point, he even wondered whether the "Mathematics Tour" would continue or if he would even want to step onto the stage again.

Ultimately, citing his commitment to his fans, he returned to the stage in Philadelphia. He also emphasized that his concerts should remain open to people with differing views.

Sheeran expressed concern over the tendency to pre-approve or control artists' performances; a section of the audience applauded his remarks.

Protests outside the Philadelphia venue

Pro-Palestinian protests also took place outside Sheeran's concert venue. Some demonstrators gathered with Palestinian flags and spoke in support of Macklemore's right to freedom of expression.

Meanwhile, the concert proceeded with some changes. In the absence of the scheduled supporting acts—including Macklemore—Sheeran performed the main set alone. The tour will now continue across North and South America.
