England Send Clear Message to Brydon Carse After Off-Field Controversy

Brydon Carse has been left out of England’s Test squad following an off-field incident, with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) making it clear that the fast bowler now needs time to address his issues and get himself back on track.

Carse was briefly detained after allegedly behaving drunkenly and disorderly outside a bar while celebrating a County Championship victory with his Durham teammates. Derbyshire Police subsequently confirmed that they were investigating an alleged assault connected to the incident. However, Carse’s involvement in the matter has not been established.

The ECB is also conducting its own investigation. As a result, Carse was omitted from England’s squad for the third Test of the ongoing series against Pakistan and was also left out of the white-ball squads for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka.

The ECB has made it clear that Carse’s omission is not related to injury, poor form or cricketing reasons. Instead, the decision was taken to give the 29-year-old time to address the issues surrounding the Derby incident and focus on putting himself in a better position.

An ECB spokesperson told Cricinfo that Carse was available for selection but was not included in the Sri Lanka squad. The board believes he needs time to deal with the issues surrounding the incident and get himself back on track. The ECB also stressed that the decision was not based on any assumption about the outcome of the ongoing investigation.

Carse was previously punished by the ECB in 2024 for breaching its betting regulations. He received a three-month suspension, with a longer ban partially suspended.

He subsequently established himself as a regular across England’s three formats. During last season’s disappointing Ashes campaign in Australia, Carse finished as England’s leading wicket-taker.

England Test captain Joe Root has also indicated that Carse is embarrassed and apologetic about what happened. Root suggested that the fast bowler may need to spend some time away from the squad before returning to international cricket.

The latest incident has added to growing concerns over off-field behaviour among England players. Ahead of the second Test against Pakistan, Root admitted he was frustrated by what he described as repeated “stupid mistakes” by members of the team. He also suggested that the recent controversies could serve as an opportunity to reset England’s culture both on and off the field.
