Four pacers or spin in Mackay Test? Bangladesh ponders on playing XI
After the historic win in Darwin, it was natural to expect the same XI to be retained in the second Test against Australia. However, the wicket and conditions at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay have created the possibility of a slight change in that idea. The big question now is whether Bangladesh will take the field with four pacers, especially due to the pace-friendly conditions.
Coach Phil Simmons, however, has already said that he does not want to break the winning streak unless it is very urgent. Even then, the topic of changing the eleven has come up in the press conference of captain Nazmul Hossain.
Mackay's condition may be more conducive to pace than Darwin. Therefore, the possibility of adding another pacer to the three pacers cannot be ruled out. Shariful Islam's name is coming up the most in that discussion.
Today's practice has also somewhat fueled that possibility. Along with bowling, Shariful was seen batting in the nets for a long time. The batting of Bangladesh's tailenders against Australia in the Darwin Test played an important role. It is therefore significant that Shariful also spent extra time in batting practice with Taskin Ahmed, Ibadat Hossain and Hasan Mahmud. On the other hand, left-arm spinner Taijul Islam did not bat in the nets today.
However, Nazmul did not want to make any decision about the XI right away. The captain said that all possible options are open to him. He did not rule out the possibility of playing five pacers with Khaled Ahmed, not four, if necessary. In other words, all the pacers in the team are ready to play.
However, Nazmul also has full confidence in the spinners. He believes that left-arm spinner Taijul Islam and off-spinner Mehedi Hasan Miraj can be effective in any condition. The Bangladesh captain is especially satisfied with the recent performance of the two spinners. There is also a good chance that Taijul-Miraj will retain their places.
Finally, after seeing Mackay's wicket, Nazmul wants to finalize the bowling attack at the beginning of the match. Similarly, there is uncertainty about opener Tanjid Hasan.
Tanjid did not bat in the nets yesterday due to a stiff neck. After a day of rest, he underwent a scan today. However, before the report was released, he returned to the field and batted in the nets and apparently completed the practice without any problems.
Still, Nazmul does not want to be completely sure about Tanjid. The captain said about the opener, who scored a century in his second Test in Darwin, "Today is positive. However, we want to see a little more until tomorrow morning. Hopefully he will be fine. We have all kinds of options, so I don't think there will be much of a problem."
Meanwhile, there was concern about Mushfiqur Rahim's finger injury. He received primary treatment after getting injured while batting in the nets yesterday. Later, he returned to batting and practiced today, although for a relatively short time.
Nazmul is currently at ease with Mushfiq. He said, "Mushfiq bhai is fine so far. Tanjid also batted today. Overall, I think we will be able to make a good decision tomorrow morning.’
If both Tanjid and Mushfiqur are fit, there is little chance of any major changes in the batting department. If Tanjid is unable to play in the end, Soumya Sarkar may be seen in his place.
On the other hand, if a pacer is added, Shariful Islam, who has received extra attention from the coach in practice, is the most likely candidate to enter the XI. In that case, Taijul Islam may be out of the XI.
However, all speculation will end before the match. Bangladesh will choose the final XI after observing Mackay’s wicket and conditions. After the historic victory in Darwin, the goal now is to advance in the series—and the coordination of the XI in that mission could be the biggest strategic decision.
