Mitchell Starc produced a devastating opening spell in the Mackay Test, leaving Bangladesh in a nightmare after the visitors were bowled out for just 64 in their first innings.

Bangladesh arrived in Mackay hoping to seal the series after their historic victory in Darwin. However, after losing the toss and being asked to bat first, they quickly found themselves in deep trouble against Australia’s left-arm quick.

Bangladesh had lost five wickets for just 12 runs, with Starc taking all five in only 22 deliveries. He eventually finished with six wickets for 12 runs from 10 overs, completing the 19th five-wicket haul of his Test career.

Starc’s remarkable performance was watched closely by his wife, Alyssa Healy. The former Australia wicketkeeper-batter is working as a commentator during the Mackay Test, giving her a front-row view of her husband’s outstanding spell.

Healy later took the opportunity to interview Starc during the Test, asking him about Australia’s bowling approach after the first Test in Darwin.

Asked what Australia needed to do differently with the ball, Starc explained that the bowlers had to target a fuller length, use the short ball more effectively and make sure they held onto their chances in the field.

Bangladesh had shown plenty of patience and batted well during the first Test, Starc noted, meaning Australia wanted to make a slight adjustment to its approach in Mackay.

“We needed to get the ball a little fuller, use the bouncer a bit more and make sure we held our catches,” Starc explained.

The Australian quick also discussed the Mackay pitch, which several local players had compared to the Gabba in Brisbane. Starc admitted Australia were pleased to take advantage of the conditions early in the match and pick up six wickets during the opening session.

Asked about his own bowling performance, Starc said it was a great opportunity to bowl first on a surface that offered assistance early.

While Starc enjoyed another memorable performance, Bangladesh endured one of their worst starts in Test cricket. Their total of 64 is the fourth-lowest in their Test history.

The contrast was stark: Bangladesh were bowled out for 64, while Starc walked away with six wickets and once again became the dominant figure of the opening day in Mackay.
