Greece Make History in Germany as Klopp’s Side Suffer Another Setback

Germany suffered a shock 1–0 defeat at home as Greece produced a disciplined defensive display to secure their first-ever victory over the four-time world champions.

The UEFA Nations League encounter in Augsburg saw Germany dominate possession, controlling around 76 percent of the ball. They registered 16 shots but managed only five on target, while Greece had just eight attempts, with one on target—and that was enough to decide the match.

Germany coach Jurgen Klopp made five changes to the starting lineup following the 1–1 draw against the Netherlands. Alexander Nubel replaced Marc-Andre ter Stegen in goal.

However, Germany struggled to create clear chances in the opening half. They managed seven attempts, with only one finding the target. Karim Adeyemi’s effort in the 32nd minute was pushed away by the Greek goalkeeper for a corner.

Greece had four shots before the break but failed to seriously test Nubel.

Germany continued to push after the interval. Their debutant winger Konte forced an excellent save early in the second half, while Joshua Kimmich also saw his effort denied by the Greek goalkeeper.

Greece missed a huge opportunity in the 67th minute when Ioannidis found himself through on goal after a German mistake. With only the goalkeeper to beat, however, he fired wide.

The visitors finally found the breakthrough in the 74th minute. Dimitrios Kourbelis’ shot inside the box took a deflection off a German player and changed direction before finding the net.

The goal proved decisive and gave Greece their first victory over Germany in 11 meetings. Germany had won seven of the previous 10 encounters, with the other three ending in draws.

The defeat also extended Germany’s winless run to four matches. Klopp, appointed after Germany’s World Cup exit in the last 32, has now overseen two matches without a victory, following the 1–1 draw with the Netherlands.

Greece now lead their Nations League group with six points from two matches. The Netherlands have four points, Germany one, while Serbia remain without a point.

Germany will face Serbia at home next Thursday, while Greece will take on the Netherlands on the same day.
