My Only Goal Was to Return to Barça

João Cancelo is officially a Barcelona player again. Unlike his previous two spells, when he arrived on loan from Manchester City and Al Hilal, the Portuguese full-back has now returned to the Catalan club on a permanent deal.

The 32-year-old signed a three-year contract on Thursday in the presence of Barcelona president Joan Laporta. Before completing his return, Cancelo reportedly ended his contract with Al Hilal by mutual agreement.

The decision was clear in his mind despite a difficult few weeks.

“The last few weeks were difficult, but I was clear about what I wanted. My only goal was to return to Barça. My representatives knew that I only wanted to play here.”

Cancelo first joined Barcelona on loan from Manchester City during the 2023-24 season before returning to the club on loan from Al Hilal last January. Across his two previous spells, he made 65 appearances, scoring six goals and providing nine assists.

The Portuguese defender also spoke about his continued love for Barcelona. While his first spell ended without a major trophy, he later helped the club enjoy a more successful campaign.

Now, Cancelo has much bigger ambitions. He wants Barcelona to compete for every major trophy, with the Champions League at the top of his list.

“A club like Barcelona has to be ready to win everything. We will definitely fight for the Champions League and do everything possible to win it.”

Cancelo will also reunite with his former Manchester City teammate Rodri, who recently joined Barcelona. The Portuguese international had high praise for the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner.

“Rodri is one of the best players I have played with in my career. He contributes enormously in both attack and defence. We have had a good relationship since our time at City, and it is very easy to play alongside him.”

Barcelona will begin their bid for a third consecutive La Liga title under Hansi Flick on Sunday against Elche. The Catalan giants have also strengthened their squad with the additions of Rodri, England winger Anthony Gordon and German forward Karim Adeyemi.

With Cancelo now back on a permanent basis, Barcelona will hope his experience can help them compete for major honours on all fronts.
