Rodri Makes Dream Barcelona Debut as Flick’s Side Beat Athletic Bilbao 2-0
Rodri finally made his long-awaited debut for Barcelona after joining the Catalan giants from Manchester City. The Ballon d’Or-winning midfielder came on in the second half against Athletic Bilbao in La Liga, as Barcelona secured a convincing 2-0 victory.
Rodri had been expected to make his debut in Barcelona’s previous match against Elche. However, with the Spanish midfielder still lacking match rhythm, head coach Hansi Flick decided not to rush him into action.
The opportunity finally arrived against Athletic Bilbao. In the 63rd minute, Flick brought Rodri on for Raphinha, and the Barcelona supporters immediately welcomed the midfielder with a huge round of applause.
By the time Rodri entered the pitch, Barcelona were already 1-0 ahead. Raphinha opened the scoring in the 37th minute after receiving a brilliant pass from Pedri before producing a composed finish.
The Brazilian winger has started the new season in excellent form. After scoring twice against Elche in the previous game, Raphinha once again found the net against Athletic Bilbao while operating in a more central attacking role.
Barcelona doubled their advantage late in the match through Fermin Lopez. Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte made a costly mistake, and Fermin took full advantage to seal a 2-0 victory for the hosts.
Rodri’s debut was not the only reason for Barcelona fans to be excited. Flick once again showed his faith in the club’s young generation, starting with teenage talents including Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsi, Marc Bernal and Javi Espart.
The combination of Barcelona’s young players with an experienced midfielder like Rodri offered supporters an encouraging glimpse of what the club’s future could look like.
After the match, Rodri focused more on the team’s victory than on his personal debut. The Spanish midfielder said he was happy to finally play his first match for Barcelona and emphasized the importance of regaining rhythm and securing another win.
Raphinha’s form was another major talking point. Although naturally a winger, the Brazilian has been used as a striker by Flick and has responded with goals. After his brace against Elche, he scored again against Athletic Bilbao.
Flick has no concerns about Raphinha’s position. The Barcelona boss praised the forward’s commitment to the club and said his versatility was not an issue.
The victory also extended Barcelona’s impressive home winning run in La Liga to 20 consecutive matches. The club’s previous best home winning streak was 25 matches between November 2012 and January 2014.
Athletic Bilbao, meanwhile, struggled to create chances at Camp Nou. They failed to register a single shot on Barcelona’s goal and have now gone 16 consecutive matches without a win at the Catalan club’s home ground.
Flick summed up the excitement surrounding Rodri’s arrival perfectly after the match, describing him as a “perfect” player for Barcelona. According to the German coach, Rodri’s qualities fit the club’s philosophy and the style of football they want to play.
With his first appearance now complete, Rodri’s Barcelona journey has officially begun—and it could prove to be one of the most important additions to Flick’s team.
