Root’s Strong Message Fully Accepted by England Players, Says Josh Tongue

England Test captain Joe Root’s strong message regarding players’ off-field conduct has been fully accepted by the squad, fast bowler Josh Tongue has said. According to Tongue, an open and honest discussion with Root was necessary following the recent controversy surrounding Brydon Carse.

Off-field controversies are nothing new in English cricket. However, a series of recent incidents has once again raised concerns about the team’s image and discipline. Carse was the latest player to face scrutiny after an incident outside a nightclub in Derby, which resulted in him being left out of England’s squad for the second Test. The incident is also being investigated by cricket authorities.

A video circulated on social media showed Carse handcuffed with his hands behind his back outside a nightclub. Although he was later released, the incident prompted an investigation and ultimately led to his omission from England’s squad for the second Test against Pakistan at Lord’s.

Root Emphasizes the Pride of Wearing England’s Jersey

Following the incident involving Carse, Root held a frank discussion with the England players. Tongue said the captain’s message about what it means to represent England and wear the national team jersey was very clear.

“There was a need for that conversation. It was a very good discussion from Root. His message about what it means to be an England cricketer was very clear. Being able to wear the England shirt is a huge privilege for us,” Tongue said.

Root also reminded his teammates of the pride and joy of representing England in front of thousands of supporters, while emphasizing the responsibility they have to set an example for the next generation.

Removing the Curfew Came With a Call for Responsibility

One of Root’s first decisions after taking over the leadership role was to remove the team’s midnight curfew. However, along with that freedom came an expectation that players would behave like mature and responsible professionals.

Root has expressed his frustration with the recent incidents, stressing that repeated off-field problems can distract the team from its performances on the field. He also highlighted the importance of rebuilding trust in the England side.

‘The Conversation Is Over, Now Our Focus Is on the Match’

Tongue also offered an insight into what Root told the players in the dressing room following the Carse incident.

“He was honest with all of us in the dressing room. He spoke directly and said what he wanted to say. Since that conversation ended, all our focus has been on the next five-day match,” Tongue said.

Asked whether Root’s message had reached the players, Tongue replied: “Yes, 100 percent. What happened in the past is in the past. We have to put all that behind us and try to move forward.”

England currently lead the Test series 1-0 after defeating Pakistan by an innings and 103 runs in the opening match. The second Test at Lord’s begins on Thursday, with England aiming to seal their first Test series victory in almost two years.
