Portugal Beat Denmark 4-2 Without Cristiano Ronaldo
Portugal continued their winning run without Cristiano Ronaldo, defeating Denmark 4-2 in a dramatic UEFA Nations League clash. Despite twice allowing Denmark to level the score, Jorge Jesus' side produced a strong finish to secure another important victory.
Ronaldo's absence dominated the build-up to the match, with most questions at Jesus' pre-match press conference focused on the Portugal captain. The coach, however, insisted that his team needed to concentrate on the game.
Ronaldo had left Portugal's training camp unexpectedly on Wednesday, shortly after Jesus confirmed that the veteran forward would not start against Denmark. He had also remained on the bench for the entire match against Norway, which Portugal won 2-1. Ronaldo had captained the side in their earlier 1-0 victory over Wales.
Portugal showed little sign of being distracted by the controversy surrounding their captain. Joao Cancelo opened the scoring in the 13th minute, giving the hosts an early advantage.
Denmark responded, but Portugal quickly regained control as Goncalo Ramos delivered on Jesus' trust with a superb finish to restore the lead.
Rasmus Hojlund brought Denmark level again early in the second half, setting up a tense finish. Portugal then moved ahead for a third time when Vitinha scored with a header in the 57th minute.
Denmark refused to surrender and levelled once more through a curling finish from Mads Beier.
With the match heading towards a tense finale, substitute Joao Felix produced the decisive moment. The forward finished a quick counter-attack in the 87th minute to give Portugal a 4-2 victory.
Ronaldo had said on Instagram after leaving the camp that he would reveal the real reason for his departure "in due time." Jesus also indicated before the match that there would be an opportunity to discuss the issue after the game.
For now, however, Portugal's performances on the pitch remain the main story. The victory marked their third consecutive win under Jesus, with the team maintaining its momentum despite Ronaldo's absence.
