Double Injury Blow for Arsenal as Arteta Says: ‘This Has Never Happened’

Arsenal have suffered a double injury setback after Piero Hincapie and Martin Zubimendi picked up injuries during a post-match training session following Saturday’s Premier League victory over Leeds United.

Both players will undergo further scans to determine the severity of their injuries and how long they could be sidelined. Their availability for Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Lille is now in doubt.

Arsenal beat Leeds 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday. Hincapie, 24, came on as a substitute in the 82nd minute, while 27-year-old midfielder Zubimendi did not feature in the match.

The pair were subsequently involved in a training session arranged for players who had either played limited minutes or had not featured against Leeds. It was during that session that both suffered injuries.

Arteta: ‘This Has Never Happened in Seven Years’

Speaking at his press conference on Monday, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta explained that the club would need further medical tests before knowing the full extent of the injuries.

“We planned a session after the game for the players who had fewer minutes. Unfortunately, two incidents happened and we lost two players. They will have some more scans to understand the situation and then we will know how long they will be out.”

Asked whether Arsenal could have avoided the injuries by cancelling the additional training session, Arteta responded with a touch of humour.

“If we had never trained them, they wouldn’t have been injured. But then what would happen is that when they were asked to play, they wouldn’t have the rhythm or the impact in the game.”

Arteta also admitted that such an incident was unprecedented during his time at the club.

“In my seven years here, this has never happened. It could have happened in the next training session as well. It has happened, and hopefully it doesn’t happen again. But what can you do?”

Hincapie and Zubimendi Facing Lille Doubts

Hincapie has made three Premier League appearances as a substitute this season, although he started Arsenal’s Champions League victory over Napoli last month.

Zubimendi, meanwhile, has largely been used from the bench and has made five Premier League appearances as a substitute.

With Arsenal preparing to face Lille in the Champions League on Tuesday, the injuries to Hincapie and Zubimendi have added another concern for Arteta ahead of the European fixture.
