Few expected Manchester City to struggle against newly promoted Ipswich Town, and the expected result eventually arrived at the Etihad Stadium. Pep Guardiola's side defeated Ipswich 3–2, with Erling Haaland scoring twice to help City secure their seventh consecutive Premier League victory.
Haaland put City 2–1 ahead in the 34th minute with his first goal of the match. The Norwegian striker scored again in the 69th minute to make it 3–1 and put City firmly in control.
Haaland later appeared to complete his hat-trick with a spectacular acrobatic finish. However, the goal was ruled out after Enzo Fernandez was found to be offside during the build-up.
Ipswich gave themselves hope of a late comeback when they were awarded a penalty in the 90th minute after Marc Guehi fouled Abdul Fatawu. Jean Fleming converted from the spot to reduce the deficit to 3–2.
Despite 12 minutes of added time, Ipswich could not find another goal as Manchester City held on to claim all three points.
The victory made Manchester City only the third team in Premier League history to win their opening seven matches of a season. Chelsea achieved the feat in the 2005–06 season, while Liverpool did it in 2019–20.
Enzo Maresca also created a unique personal record. He became the first manager in Premier League history to win each of his first seven matches in charge of a club.
Meanwhile, Liverpool defeated Brentford 2–1 in another match played at the same time. Brentford took the lead through Lewis-Potter in the 44th minute, but Liverpool turned the game around in the second half with goals from Munoz and Isak.
Brentford finished the match with nine players after two of their players were sent off. Yarmolyuk was shown a red card in first-half stoppage time, while Janelt was dismissed in second-half stoppage time.
Despite being reduced to nine men, Brentford could not prevent Liverpool from completing the comeback.
After seven matches, Manchester City sit top of the Premier League table with a perfect 21 points. Liverpool, meanwhile, have 12 points and are currently fifth in the standings.
