Champions League Draw: Who Has the Easier Fixtures and Who Faces a Tough Challenge?
The Champions League draw has created very different challenges for Europe's biggest clubs. While Liverpool and Real Madrid appear to have received relatively favourable schedules, Barcelona, Manchester United, Villarreal and Aston Villa face a much tougher road.
Liverpool Can Feel Comfortable
Liverpool have avoided PSG, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich. Their biggest challenges will come against Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid.
Matches against Club Brugge, Villarreal, Fenerbahce, Lens and LASK offer good opportunities to collect points. For new coach Andoni Iraola, his first European campaign could have been much tougher.
A Dream Debut for Sabah
For Sabah FK, founded in 2017, this will be a historic Champions League campaign.
In their debut season, they will face Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal and Manchester United.
Their home matches against Barcelona and Dortmund will be played at the Tofig Bahramov Stadium in Baku, while Sabah will travel to Arsenal's Emirates Stadium and Manchester United's Old Trafford.
The fixtures may be difficult, but the opportunity to face Europe's biggest clubs will make the campaign unforgettable.
Real Madrid Have Reasons to Smile
Real Madrid will face Jose Mourinho's former clubs Inter Milan and Roma, making the schedule particularly interesting for their returning coach.
The trip to Arsenal could be one of their toughest tests, but Real will expect strong results against PSV Eindhoven, RB Leipzig, Shakhtar Donetsk, LASK and AEK Athens.
Overall, Madrid should be satisfied with the draw.
Teams Facing a Tough Road
Barcelona
Barcelona face Manchester City, PSG, Aston Villa and Galatasaray in a demanding league phase.
Lamine Yamal and his teammates have the quality to reach the knockout stages, but their route will be far from easy as they chase their first Champions League title since 2015.
Manchester United
Manchester United return to the Champions League after two years and immediately face major challenges.
Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid are their toughest opponents, while away matches against Villarreal and Como could also be difficult.
There will be little room for mistakes.
Villarreal
After collecting only one point last season, Villarreal face another difficult campaign.
PSG, Liverpool, Manchester United, Borussia Dortmund and Napoli are all on their schedule. Good results against Sabah and Slavia Prague could be crucial.
Aston Villa
Aston Villa also face a demanding draw, with PSG, Barcelona, Dortmund, Club Brugge and Galatasaray among their opponents.
Unai Emery's European experience will be vital if Villa are to survive a challenging league phase.
Final Verdict
Liverpool and Real Madrid appear to have the most favourable routes, while Barcelona, Manchester United, Villarreal and Aston Villa face much tougher challenges.
For Sabah FK, however, simply sharing the pitch with some of Europe's greatest clubs will make their Champions League debut a historic and unforgettable experience.
