India are within touching distance of victory in the first Test at the Galle International Stadium. At the end of the fourth day, Sri Lanka need 278 more runs to chase down a target of 372, while India require just six wickets to seal victory. With rain forecast for the final day, the Indian bowlers will be eager to finish the match as quickly as possible.

India were bowled out for 193 in their second innings on day four, setting Sri Lanka a daunting target of 372 runs. The hosts struggled immediately in their chase and ended the day on 84 for 4.

Mohammed Siraj provided India with an early breakthrough, dismissing opener Nishan Madushka with Sri Lanka’s score on just six. Spinner Manav Suthar then struck twice, removing Lahiru Udara for 16 and concussion substitute Pasindu Sooriyabandara for a duck.

The pressure increased further when Kamindu Mendis was dismissed for just two with the score on 47.

However, Sonal Dinusha and captain Dhananjaya de Silva managed to steady the innings late in the day. Dinusha remained unbeaten on 25, while Dhananjaya was not out on 31. The pair put together an unbeaten 37-run fifth-wicket partnership, delaying India’s victory charge.

Earlier, India resumed their second innings at 116 for 4 and looked to accelerate their scoring. Rishabh Pant played an aggressive knock of 66 from just 69 balls, including eight fours and two sixes. Devdutt Padikkal added 44, while KL Rahul contributed 35 to help India build a substantial lead.

Sri Lanka pacer Asitha Fernando, however, finished strongly with the ball. His four-wicket haul helped Sri Lanka remove India’s final four batters for just 19 runs, but India still managed to set a formidable target thanks to their first-innings advantage.

Sri Lanka also suffered an injury concern when Dinesh Chandimal hurt his shoulder while attempting a catch near the boundary. He was taken to hospital for assessment, but scans reportedly showed no serious damage.

Sri Lanka now face a huge challenge on the final day. They need another 278 runs to save themselves from defeat, while India require only six wickets to complete the job. Rain could offer the hosts some hope, but India remain firmly in control heading into the final day.

Six wickets stand between India and victory, while Sri Lanka face a 278-run mountain—a thrilling finish awaits in Galle.
