Mac Allister changes his tune regarding the emotional aspect of the contract.

Argentine midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has clarified comments he made two weeks ago regarding his future at Liverpool. Although he had expressed feeling "very, very bad" at an Anfield press conference about not receiving a new contract, he has now explained—upon returning to the national team camp—that those remarks were driven primarily by emotion.

Mac Allister’s current contract runs until 2028. Questions regarding his own deal arose after his Liverpool teammates Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch secured new long-term contracts. On September 8, prior to a Champions League match against Atletico Madrid, Mac Allister revealed that the club had informed his agent they were not in a position to offer a new contract at that time. He also mentioned that he had the opportunity to leave the club during the summer.

"I wasn't trying to judge the club"

After joining the Argentina national team, Mac Allister clarified his earlier statements, explaining that journalists had asked about his future during the press conference and he had answered based on his feelings.

The gist of his remarks was that they were spoken out of emotion, not to judge or blame Liverpool. He acknowledged that the final decision on whether to offer a new contract rests with the club.

Wants to stay at Liverpool

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his contract, the 2022 World Cup-winning midfielder expressed no doubt about his commitment to Liverpool. He had previously stated that he would give his all for the club until the final day of his contract.

Maintaining this stance at the national team camp, Mac Allister reiterated his desire to stay at Liverpool for many more years. However, he also accepted that if his tenure were to end upon the expiration of his current contract, he would come to terms with that as well.

Since joining Liverpool in 2023, Mac Allister has become a key midfielder for the team. He was part of the squad during the 2024-25 season. Under his current contract, he is set to remain at Anfield until 2028.

Consequently, no final decision regarding Mac Allister's future has been made yet. It remains to be seen whether discussions for a new contract will progress or if he will simply see out his current deal until 2028.
