Manchester United History: UCL Triumphs, Major Trophies and Complete Honours

Manchester United are one of the most historic and successful football clubs in England. Founded in 1878 as Newton Heath L&YR Football Club, the club changed its name to Manchester United in 1902 before moving to Old Trafford in 1910. Since then, United have grown into one of the biggest clubs in English and European football.

Manchester United have won 20 English league titles, 13 FA Cups, six League Cups and three European Cup/UEFA Champions League titles. Their European honours also include the UEFA Europa League, European Cup Winners' Cup and UEFA Super Cup.

Manchester United's UEFA Champions League History

Manchester United made their European Cup debut in 1956. They started their campaign with a remarkable 10-0 victory over Belgian champions Anderlecht. United reached the semi-finals in both 1956/57 and 1957/58, but the latter campaign became overshadowed by the Munich Air Disaster, in which eight United players were among the 23 people who lost their lives.

Sir Matt Busby rebuilt the team after the tragedy. Led by legends such as Bobby Charlton, George Best and Denis Law, United won their first European Cup in 1968 by defeating Benfica at Wembley. The victory made Manchester United the first English club to win the European Cup.

1999: The Historic Treble

Manchester United had to wait 31 years for their second European Cup triumph. Under Sir Alex Ferguson, United reached the 1999 final against Bayern Munich at Barcelona's Camp Nou.

Bayern led 1-0 until injury time, but Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored two late goals to complete one of the most famous comebacks in football history.

The Champions League triumph completed United's historic Treble, after they had already won the Premier League and FA Cup during the same season.

2008: United Become European Champions Again

Manchester United won their third European Cup/Champions League title in 2008. The final against Chelsea in Moscow finished 1-1 after extra time before United won the penalty shootout.

Edwin van der Sar became the hero by saving Nicolas Anelka's decisive penalty, securing United's third European crown.

United returned to the Champions League final in 2009 and 2011, but Barcelona won both finals.

The Sir Alex Ferguson Era

Sir Alex Ferguson became Manchester United manager in 1986. After a difficult start, his first major breakthrough came with the 1990 FA Cup. From there, United entered one of the most successful periods in English football history.

Ferguson guided United to 13 Premier League titles, including the club's record 20th English league championship in 2013. He retired at the end of the 2012/13 season.

The 1990s were particularly significant for United. Players such as Eric Cantona, David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Roy Keane formed the backbone of a team that eventually completed the historic Treble in 1999.

Manchester United's official Trophy Room lists 70 honours for the men's team when the two Football League Second Division titles are included alongside the other listed honours.

If those two second-tier titles are excluded, United have 68 senior honours, including 21 Community Shield victories. Some Community Shield wins were shared after draws.

The Legacy of Manchester United

Manchester United's story is much bigger than a list of trophies. From the club's origins as Newton Heath, through the Busby Babes and the Munich tragedy, to the 1968 European Cup triumph, Sir Alex Ferguson's golden era, the 1999 Treble and the 2008 Champions League victory, United have built one of football's richest and most dramatic histories.

Old Trafford remains more than a football stadium—it is a symbol of Manchester United's identity, heritage and more than a century of football history.
