South Indian cinema superstar Rajinikanth returns as ‘Tiger’ Muthuvel Pandian. Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, the film offers a high-octane commercial entertainer, blending action, comedy, and emotion, bolstered by a star-studded cast. The film’s greatest draw is undoubtedly Rajinikanth himself—his screen presence, his signature delivery of dialogues, and his iconic, inimitable style. However, the film falls short of perfection, as the screenplay loses some of its momentum in the second half.
In its review, NDTV awarded the film 3.5 out of 5 stars. Critic Latha Srinivasan notes that it is Rajinikanth’s star power and performance that carry the film.
From Retirement Back into the Underworld
The story follows Muthuvel Pandian, who seeks a peaceful retirement. He begins working as a supervisor in a small town in Tamil Nadu, but his life takes a turn following a conflict with a local municipal official. Eventually, he finds himself drawn back into the criminal underworld while working as a driver for a local don named Murthy.
Meanwhile, members of Varma’s gang are on the hunt for the person responsible for their leader’s death. The gang is led by Dileep (played by Suraj Venjaramoodu) and Bodhi Kalpak (played by S.J. Suryah). A confrontation erupts between Pandian and Bodhi Kalpak, thrusting the former jailer—who had hoped for a quiet retirement—into fresh, dangerous territory.
Engaging First Half, Slower Pace in the Second
According to the review, the first half of the film keeps the audience hooked with a mix of humor, emotion, and a steadily building sense of tension. Director Nelson Dilipkumar effectively blends his trademark dry wit with high-energy action sequences. However, as the narrative expands after the interval, the introduction of multiple characters, complex conflicts, and prolonged action sequences cause the film’s pacing to falter in certain parts. Alongside Rajinikanth, the film features stars such as Mohanlal, Shivarajkumar, Vijay Sethupathi, Vidya Balan, Mithun Chakraborty, and Hrithik Roshan. Their presence adds to the film's appeal; however, reviews note that not all characters receive equal weight within the narrative, given the sheer number of stars involved.
Rajinikanth’s Style: The Heart of the Film
Even at the age of 75, Rajinikanth’s commanding screen presence continues to captivate audiences. His restrained expressions, impeccable comic timing, unique delivery of dialogue, and effortless style elevate even the most ordinary scenes. The director deserves credit for leveraging Rajinikanth’s star power to craft moments where a single glance or a line of dialogue is enough to send the audience into a frenzy.
His dialogues and action sequences, in particular, serve as a major draw for fans. The film is peppered with moments specifically designed to elicit applause and cheers from the audience in the cinema hall.
Anirudh’s Contribution to the Music
The film’s music and background score are composed by Anirudh Ravichander. His background score plays a crucial role in amplifying Rajinikanth’s on-screen presence. The song "One Sun One Moon" is used to notable effect. Among the two featured songs, "Ala Bolelo" makes a stronger impact, while "Bindass" is less memorable, according to reviews.
Overall, how is *Jailer 2*?
*Jailer 2* is, at its core, a star-studded entertainer packed with action, comedy, and music—tailor-made for Rajinikanth’s fans. Despite some weaknesses in the second half of the screenplay, Rajinikanth’s performance and several memorable moments crafted by the director make the film an enjoyable watch.
According to NDTV, *Jailer 2* is a high-octane commercial entertainer, with Rajinikanth himself serving as its greatest strength. Moreover, since the end of the film hints at the possibility of a ‘Jailer 3’, it is clear that the story of Tiger Muthuvel Pandian does not end here.
