Trump Says He Deserves the Nobel Peace Prize

US President Donald Trump has claimed that he deserves to win the Nobel Peace Prize, while also expressing doubts about whether the Norwegian Nobel Committee will choose him.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office at the White House on Wednesday, Trump suggested that people like him may not be the type of candidates the committee wants to recognize.

“I don’t know what they’re going to do. They have a reputation for maybe not wanting to give it to people like me,” Trump said.

Since returning to the White House for his second term, Trump has repeatedly claimed credit for helping end or de-escalate several wars and conflicts. He has said that he played a role in stopping eight conflicts since taking office in January last year.

Trump argues that those efforts make him deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize. However, parties involved in several of the conflicts have disputed his claims about his diplomatic role. Fighting has also resurfaced in areas including the Democratic Republic of Congo and along the Cambodia-Thailand border.

Trump also pointed to calls from leaders in Cambodia, Israel and Pakistan for him to be nominated for the prestigious award. However, there is no independent way to verify those claims about nominations.

Trump previously received the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize medal from Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who gave him her medal in January. Trump referred to the gesture while discussing the peace prize.

“I was very honored to have gotten it indirectly from the last winner,” Trump said, adding that she had said that no one in history deserved the prize more than President Trump.

Among the names being discussed as potential contenders for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize are Pope Leo, the International Criminal Court and the United Nations special envoy for the Palestinian territories.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee is scheduled to announce the winner of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday. Until then, Trump says he believes the award should be his, even as he remains uncertain about whether the committee will agree.
