West Bengal Records 2,454 Rape Cases in Five Months, TMC-BJP Clash Over Crime Data
West Bengal Records 2,454 Rape Cases in Five Months, TMC-BJP Clash Over Crime Data
West Bengal recorded 2,454 registered rape cases during the first five months of the new BJP government, according to figures attributed to the State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB) and cited by the Trinamool Congress.
The figures, covering May to September 24, 2026, also include 600 murder cases, 13,114 attempted murder cases and 32,341 cases involving grievous hurt, according to the data cited by the party.
The figures have triggered a fresh political dispute in the state, with the TMC questioning the law-and-order situation and demanding a special session of the West Bengal Assembly.
Around 16 Rape Cases a Day
According to the figures cited by the TMC, 2,454 rape cases were registered during the period, averaging roughly 16 cases a day.
The monthly breakdown shows 349 cases in May, 389 in June, 786 in July, 459 in August and 471 through September 24.
The same data lists 600 murders, 13,114 attempted murders and 32,341 cases of grievous hurt during the period.
TMC Demands Special Assembly Session
TMC leaders Kunal Ghosh and lawyer Arka Nag highlighted the figures outside the state Assembly and called for a special session to discuss the law-and-order situation.
TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee also shared the figures on social media. Based on the five-month totals, he said the numbers amounted to around 16 rape cases, four murders, 87 attempted murders and 216 cases of grievous assault per day.
The party has also called for explanations from the state government and the Governor over the reported crime figures.
Questions Over Complaint Registration
Lawyer Arka Nag, who has represented the TMC in several cases, also questioned the process of registering complaints.
He alleged that police do not always give sufficient attention to complaints and that there have been instances where complaints were allegedly not accepted. He argued that the official figures could have been higher if all complaints had been properly registered.
BJP Rejects TMC’s Allegations
The BJP has rejected the TMC’s interpretation of the figures.
BJP spokesperson Debjit Sarkar argued that the number of registered cases should not automatically be viewed as evidence of administrative failure. He claimed that the current government is ensuring greater transparency by registering complaints that may not have been formally recorded under the previous administration.
According to the BJP, accepting complaints, registering cases and taking action based on them are part of accountable governance.
Crime Data Sparks Fresh Political Row
The SCRB figures have become the centre of a new political dispute in West Bengal. The TMC is using the numbers to question the state’s law-and-order situation, while the BJP says the figures partly reflect greater transparency in registering complaints.
The competing interpretations have intensified the debate over crime, women’s safety and policing in the state. Attention will now turn to whether the government provides a detailed response and whether the issue is taken up for discussion in the state Assembly.
