Ben Shelton vs Alexander Zverev in US Open Final as American Star Makes History

Ben Shelton has reached the US Open men’s singles final and made history in the process. The 23-year-old American has become the first Black American man since Arthur Ashe to reach the US Open final. Ashe was the last Black American to achieve the feat in 1972.

Shelton had a difficult start in the semifinal, losing the opening set 6-3 to fellow American Frances Tiafoe. But he responded brilliantly, winning the next three sets to complete a remarkable comeback.

The 23-year-old eventually defeated Tiafoe 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 to reach his first Grand Slam final.

Shelton’s breakthrough has added another major chapter to American tennis, with the young star now just one victory away from his first Grand Slam title.

Standing in his way will be Alexander Zverev, who has been in outstanding form throughout the tournament. The German defeated Karen Khachanov in straight sets in the first semifinal, winning 6-3, 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (8-6) at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The US Open final will be Zverev’s third consecutive Grand Slam final of the year. He previously reached the finals of the Australian Open and French Open, eventually winning his first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros.

Zverev also reached the US Open final in 2020, where he let a two-set lead slip before losing to Dominic Thiem in a five-set battle. This time, he has the opportunity to win his first US Open title and the second Grand Slam trophy of his career.

Before Shelton secured his place in the final, Zverev had spoken about watching the all-American semifinal between Shelton and Tiafoe. He also acknowledged the huge support both players receive from the New York crowd.

“I think it’s going to be very special,” Zverev said. “The fans love these two guys. I’m looking forward to watching it. But hopefully, I won’t let their American dream come true.”

Now Zverev will face Shelton in the final, setting up a fascinating battle between an American star chasing history and a German champion looking for another Grand Slam title.

The US Open men’s singles final will be played at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York tomorrow.
