A New Era of Discipline: Mourinho’s Strict Rules at Real Madrid
Real Madrid spent much of last season in the headlines for off-field controversies, internal conflicts, and dressing-room tension rather than for their performances on the pitch. After ending the campaign without a single trophy, the club decided that major changes were necessary. As part of that reset, José Mourinho has returned to the Santiago Bernabéu dugout after 13 years. During his first spell in Madrid, Mourinho led the club to the 2011–12 La Liga title with a record points total. However, his tenure eventually ended amid disputes with players and growing divisions within the dressing room. Following the brief Xabi Alonso era and the departure of interim coach Álvaro Arbeloa, club president Florentino Pérez has once again entrusted Mourinho with the task of restoring order. Mourinho’s objective is clear: to establish full control of the dressing room before the new season begins and rebuild discipline and unity within the squad. Even during pre-season training, Mourinho has already begun stamping his authority on Valdebebas. According to Spanish sports daily AS, several key changes have been introduced to the players’ daily routines. Previously, arriving late resulted in a fine. Under the new rules, the punishment is much stricter. Any player who arrives after the scheduled time will not be allowed to join the team training session and will instead have to work alone in the gym. In addition, all players are now required to be at Valdebebas at least one hour before training sessions or team meetings. Dietary rules have also been tightened. Players can no longer choose their own breakfast or afternoon snacks. The club’s nutritionists now determine the entire meal plan, with the goal of maximizing fitness, physical performance, and recovery levels. Although players previously enjoyed greater freedom in this area, the squad is said to have accepted the new approach positively. Mourinho has also taken a firm stance on medical treatment. Players are no longer free to seek external treatment independently. The entire rehabilitation and recovery process must now be carried out under the supervision of the club’s medical and recovery staff. This move is intended to bring fitness management and injury recovery under a centralized system. So far, there have been no public complaints from the players about Mourinho’s stricter regime. In fact, AS reports that many players appreciate the effort to restore unity and create a healthier dressing-room environment. An internal club source was quoted as saying: “The atmosphere at the club right now is really, really good.” Despite the encouraging early signs, doubts remain about how Real Madrid’s star players will adapt to Mourinho’s demanding discipline over the long term. His first spell in Madrid also began successfully before relationships inside the dressing room eventually became the biggest problem. For now, Mourinho is sending a very clear message: at Real Madrid, the team, discipline, and control will come before individual comfort and personal freedom. Whether this tougher approach can guide the club back to winning trophies is the question that will define his second era at the Bernabéu.A Tougher Message on Punctuality
