India Build Toward 2027 World Cup as West Indies Seek Stronger Bowling Attack

India and the West Indies are already looking beyond the current ODI series, with both teams using the second match as part of their longer-term preparations for the 2027 World Cup.

India lead the three-match series 1-0 after a dominant eight-wicket victory in the opening ODI in Thiruvananthapuram. While India are testing different combinations and giving greater opportunities to all-rounders, the West Indies are considering changes to their bowling attack to better challenge India's powerful batting order.

The visitors made a strong start in the first ODI. Justin Greaves produced an impressive century while John Campbell added a half-century as the pair put together a 135-run opening partnership.

India, however, turned the game around with the ball. Kuldeep Yadav was the standout performer, taking 4-40 to put the West Indies under pressure in the middle overs.

India then finished the chase comfortably, with Virat Kohli remaining unbeaten on 139 and Shubman Gill scoring 110. Their centuries helped India reach the target after losing only two wickets.

With India's batting strength exposed in the opening game, the West Indies are considering bolstering their bowling options. Fast bowler Shamar Joseph and leg-spinner Vaitel Laos are among the players being considered as the Caribbean side looks for greater wicket-taking ability.

India, meanwhile, are taking a broader approach. With the 2027 World Cup in mind, the team management is using the series to assess all-rounders and different combinations while gradually building a potential 15-member squad.

The second ODI will be played on September 30, 2026, at the Assam Cricket Association Stadium in Guwahati. India will look to seal the series, while the West Indies will aim to level the contest and find a more effective bowling combination.
