Former Australian star opener David Warner has been sentenced after nearly four and a half months for drink-driving. Sydney's Waverley Local Court has fined him 1,500 Australian dollars. In Bangladeshi currency, which is more than 130,000 taka.
In addition to the fine, the court has also ordered Warner to use an 'interlock' device in his car for the next 12 months. This technology requires the driver to blow into a breathalyzer before starting the car. If the presence of alcohol is detected, the engine will not start.
In the ruling given on Tuesday, the court said that Warner, 39, had pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol last month.
The incident took place last April. Warner stopped his car near a police checkpoint while driving a van. Later, he was breathalyzed and taken to the police station.
In court, Warner's lawyer Awais Ahmed described his client's decision as "careless, emotional and truly stupid." However, he said that Warner admitted his mistakes and participated in a corrective program for traffic offenders.
Warner's lawyer also brought to the court's attention the negative media coverage of the case. He claimed that Warner had also been the victim of personal attacks in the incident and could face public criticism in the future.
Australian media quoted police as saying that Warner had drunk three glasses of wine before getting into the car. He then decided to drive to return to his family.
During the sentencing, Judge Claire Farnan warned Warner that even a wrong decision on the road could have serious consequences. Fortunately, no one else was in danger because of his decision. However, Warner had to suffer the consequences of his own mistakes.
