Manchester City Stage Dramatic Comeback to Beat Crystal Palace 2-1
Manchester City secured their first victory under new manager Enzo Maresca with a dramatic 2-1 win over Crystal Palace at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
The result marked City's first victory of the post-Pep Guardiola era under Maresca. The new manager had suffered defeat in his first match in charge when City lost to Arsenal in the FA Community Shield last Sunday.
City started brightly and created an early opportunity in the fourth minute. Erling Haaland found Phil Foden, who attempted a backheel towards Rico Lewis. The right-back met the ball in a promising position but sent his powerful effort straight at the goalkeeper.
Despite dominating possession for much of the match, City struggled to create clear-cut chances. They were punished in the 26th minute when Crystal Palace broke forward on the counter. An excellent pass from the right found English winger Taverner in space inside the box, and he calmly finished with a composed effort.
City came close to an equaliser early in the second half. Marc Guehi found himself in a perfect position at the far post from Elliot Anderson's corner, with the goalkeeper already moving in the opposite direction. However, the English defender somehow headed wide with the goal at his mercy.
Haaland then had two opportunities in quick succession. In the 72nd minute, he received a short pass inside the box but could not keep his effort on target under pressure. Three minutes later, the Norwegian striker had another chance from just outside the six-yard box, but his weak effort was comfortably gathered by goalkeeper Petrovic.
City finally found their equaliser in the 84th minute. Substitute Ryan Cherki delivered a corner into the box, where Marc Guehi rose highest and produced a powerful header. The ball took a deflection off a player in front of him before finding the back of the net.
Then came the decisive moment in the first minute of stoppage time. Ryan Cherki fought off two challenges before slipping a pass into the box. Josko Gvardiol controlled the ball with his first touch before firing a precise finish past the goalkeeper to complete City's dramatic comeback.
Manchester City held on for a 2-1 victory at the Etihad. Although they controlled much of the game, the hosts had to wait until the final stages to turn possession into goals. The comeback victory will provide a major boost to Maresca and his side as they begin a new era.
