Cameron Green Remains Doubtful for Gqeberha Test, Targets Third Match

Australia all-rounder Cameron Green has returned to batting practice as he continues his recovery from an abdominal muscle injury. However, he is not yet fully fit, leaving his availability for the second Test against South Africa in Gqeberha uncertain. His current focus appears to be a possible return for the third Test.

Green faced his first deliveries in the nets on Thursday, taking part in light throw-downs. He also practised taking catches in the slips before completing another fitness session under the supervision of medical staff.

Australia assistant coach Matthew Wade indicated that Green was working towards a return but suggested the team was not counting on him for the upcoming Test. A comeback in the third match appears to be the more realistic target.

“He is trying to play this Test. I’m not sure whether his finger is 100 per cent right, but he is trying to put himself in contention,” Wade said.

Wade added that Green’s return to training was encouraging, with further batting sessions expected over the coming week as he works towards a possible comeback in the third Test.

Green sustained the abdominal injury while batting in the third and final ODI against South Africa. A full toss from Corbin Bosch struck him in the lower abdomen, leaving him in visible pain. Despite receiving initial treatment and hitting the next delivery for six, Green was dismissed caught behind off the following ball. The injury subsequently ruled him out of the first Test in Durban.

Australia are also monitoring the progress of Josh Inglis, who is recovering from a finger injury. Inglis faced deliveries from Scott Boland and Michael Neser at full run-up in the nets on Thursday. He is expected to increase the intensity of his batting practice over the next few days.

Australia head coach Andrew McDonald had previously suggested that even if Green regains full fitness, he is unlikely to bowl during the remainder of the series. He could therefore return solely as a batter.

Green’s absence forced Australia to adjust their batting order in the first Test. Matt Renshaw scored 190 and 82 across the two innings after batting at No. 5, strengthening his case for the position. Green had also been pushing for the same spot following an impressive series against Bangladesh in August.

The second Test between Australia and South Africa is scheduled to begin in Gqeberha on Sunday. Australia lead the three-match series 1-0 after securing a commanding 214-run victory in Durban.
