Camp Nou or the Bernabéu? The familiar heat has returned to Spanish football. A new La Liga season is about to begin, and once again the biggest question dominates the conversation: Will the title stay in Barcelona, or will José Mourinho’s return spark a new Real Madrid revival?

Mourinho Returns to the Bernabéu

Thirteen years after his first spell, José Mourinho is back in the Real Madrid dugout. After two seasons without a major trophy, Madrid have turned once again to the Portuguese coach in search of lost glory. Many believe Florentino Pérez brought Mourinho back not only for tactics, but also to restore discipline in a star-studded dressing room.

Real were highly active in the transfer market. Ian Diomandé arrived from RB Leipzig for €125 million, while Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva, Denzel Dumfries, and Ibrahima Konaté have all strengthened the squad. Vinícius Júnior has also extended his contract until 2032.

Strengths—and Questions

Yet doubts remain. Can Mourinho’s traditionally defensive approach fit the pace and attacking intensity of modern La Liga? Last season Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius scored 41 league goals between them, with Jude Bellingham adding six more. How Mourinho reshapes such a powerful attacking unit is one of the season’s biggest stories.

Flick’s Barcelona: Relentless Going Forward

On the other side, Hansi Flick’s Barcelona continue to play with an aggressive high line, pressing opponents from the start. The downside is the space left behind. To address that weakness, Barça signed Anthony Gordon from Newcastle for €70 million, while Karim Adeyemi has also joined the squad.

The biggest concern is up front. With Robert Lewandowski moving to Chicago Fire, Barcelona no longer have a natural number nine. Whether Ferran Torres can truly fill that role may define their season.

Don’t Forget Atlético Madrid

While Barça and Madrid dominate the spotlight, Atlético Madrid cannot be ignored. Pressure is growing on Diego Simeone after another trophyless campaign despite reaching the Champions League semifinals and the Copa del Rey final.

Antoine Griezmann has departed, but Julián Álvarez remains. Atlético have also strengthened midfield with Morten Hjulmand and Lee Kang-in, each costing around €40 million.

Villarreal and Betis Could Shape the Race

Villarreal may not be outright title contenders, but they could influence the race under new coach Iñigo Pérez.

Real Betis are quietly becoming stronger as well. Manuel Pellegrini’s side finished fifth last season, returned to the Champions League after 20 years, and reached the Conference League final.

The Eternal Battle Remains

In the end, the title race still feels like Barcelona versus Real Madrid. The two El Clásicos will likely have a huge impact on the championship. But as always, a couple of unexpected slips against smaller teams could change everything.
