Canada Announces $100 Million in New Aid for Palestinians

Canada has announced an additional C$100 million in assistance for Palestinians, with Prime Minister Mark Carney making the pledge on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

According to the Canadian government, C$80 million will go toward humanitarian assistance in Gaza and the West Bank, while another C$20 million will support peace, stabilization and security-capacity initiatives.

Carney said Palestinians in Gaza continue to face immense humanitarian suffering, while Israel faces what he described as existential threats from Hamas, Iran and its regional allies. His remarks came as Canada reiterated its support for preserving the possibility of a two-state solution.

$80 Million Earmarked for Humanitarian Aid

The largest portion of the new package—C$80 million—will be directed toward humanitarian assistance in Gaza and the West Bank.

The remaining C$20 million will support peace and stabilization efforts, including additional funding for a multi-year program focused on police training in the West Bank.

Canada’s Total Assistance Surpasses C$600 Million

With the latest commitment, Canada’s total assistance aimed at addressing the needs of Palestinian civilians has surpassed C$600 million since October 2023, according to the Canadian government. Canada had also announced an additional C$100 million in June for humanitarian assistance in Gaza and the West Bank.

Canada Raises Concerns Over West Bank Settlements

Alongside its new aid package, Canada has continued to raise concerns about Israeli settlement expansion in the West Bank.

Earlier in September, Canada joined France, the United Kingdom and other countries in announcing or considering trade restrictions on goods originating from Israeli settlements. The countries said settlement expansion and settler violence were undermining the possibility of a two-state solution.

Canada has also reiterated its recognition of Israel’s security interests while condemning the October 7 Hamas attack.

Two-State Solution Remains Central

The latest funding announcement comes as Canada continues to emphasize a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Ottawa says it supports the establishment of an independent and viable Palestinian state living alongside a safe and secure Israel, while continuing humanitarian assistance for civilians affected by the conflict.
