Chelsea Ownership Changes as Clearlake Takes Full Control After Boehly and Walter Exit

Chelsea have undergone a major change in ownership, with chairman Todd Boehly and director Mark Walter selling their stakes in the Premier League club. The deal, reportedly worth around £950 million, gives US private equity firm Clearlake Capital full control of Chelsea.

When Chelsea were acquired from Roman Abramovich in 2022, Clearlake held around 61.5% of the club, while Boehly, Walter and Hansjörg Wyss controlled the remaining shareholding. With Clearlake now acquiring the interests held by Boehly and Walter, the investment firm has taken full control of the club.

The transaction also brings an end to Boehly’s tenure as Chelsea chairman. Despite the ownership change, Chelsea have said there will be no immediate changes to the club’s day-to-day operations, leadership or strategic direction.

Hansjörg Wyss will remain involved as a stakeholder and partner in the ownership group. Clearlake has also indicated that it intends to continue investing in Chelsea’s infrastructure, sporting performance and player development as part of its long-term plans for the club.

The ownership group originally completed the acquisition of Chelsea from Abramovich in 2022 in a deal worth £4.25 billion overall. The latest transaction values the club at around £5 billion, highlighting the significant rise in Chelsea’s valuation over the past four years.

The change marks a new chapter in Chelsea’s ownership history. Attention will now turn to how Clearlake’s full control affects the club’s football strategy, recruitment plans and long-term development at Stamford Bridge.
