Maresca Frustrated by Haaland VAR Debate Overshadowing Manchester City’s Derby Win

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca is frustrated that the controversy surrounding Erling Haaland’s winning goal has dominated the conversation following his side’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United.

City produced a resilient performance at Old Trafford despite playing most of the match with 10 men. Phil Foden was shown a straight red card in the 23rd minute after kicking Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, leaving City with a major challenge for the remainder of the derby.

Despite being reduced to 10 players, City found the breakthrough in the 60th minute. Josko Gvardiol’s cross took a deflection off United defender Patrick Dorgu before reaching Haaland at the far post, where the Norwegian striker finished clinically.

The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but VAR overturned the decision after determining that Haaland himself was in an onside position.

The controversy, however, centred on City midfielder Enzo Fernandez. The Argentine was in an offside position and attempted to reach the ball before Haaland, although he did not make contact. The key issue was whether his movement affected the defenders and therefore constituted an offside offence.

Pro Ref later acknowledged that an error had been made in awarding the goal. The refereeing body said VAR correctly established that Haaland was onside but failed to properly assess the potential impact of Fernandez’s position. It added that an on-field review should have been recommended.

Maresca, however, believes the controversy has overshadowed the quality of City’s performance.

“I thought the performance from City was incredible and I was very happy with the way the team played,” Maresca said.

The Italian manager also pointed out that his side had spent roughly 70 to 75 minutes playing with 10 men, yet much of the discussion had focused on a single refereeing decision.

“There was a mistake in the game and it has been acknowledged. That is the important thing. Sometimes it goes in your favour and sometimes it goes against you. That is football.”

The victory maintained City’s perfect start to the Premier League season. They have collected 12 points from four matches, while Arsenal sit above them on goal difference with the same number of points.

With the derby controversy continuing to attract attention, Maresca will now want his team’s performances and results to remain the main focus as Manchester City move forward with their season.
