Drama in Klopp vs. Xavi's first clash; Gakpo's last-gasp goal makes it 1-1.

Two familiar faces in the dugouts, yet both are now shouldering new responsibilities. Jürgen Klopp—once a household name in German club football and at Liverpool—and former Barcelona coach Xavi Hernández have both embarked on new chapters as national team coaches.

Their respective teams, Germany and the Netherlands, faced off in their opening UEFA Nations League match. The thrilling encounter in Amsterdam ended in a 1-1 draw. Felix Nmecha had put Klopp's Germany on the verge of victory, but a stoppage-time goal from Cody Gakpo—a former player under Klopp—secured an equalizer for the Netherlands.

Germany takes the lead through Nmecha

The Netherlands were more active in attack from the very beginning of the match. However, German goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen frustrated the hosts with a series of crucial saves.

Amidst this, Germany took the lead in the 32nd minute. Felix Nmecha found the back of the net with a clinical finish following a pass from Karim Adeyemi. It seemed as though Klopp was on course for a winning start.

However, the joy of the goal was soon overshadowed by concerns within the German camp.

Injury worries over Havertz and Brobbey

Germany's Kai Havertz left the pitch due to injury in the 30th minute, making way for the debut of Younes Abonoutalib. Meanwhile, the Netherlands also lost striker Brian Brobbey; he was substituted in the 35th minute due to a muscle issue, with Mex Mirdink coming on in his place.

Consequently, alongside the match result, concerns regarding player injuries have emerged for both new coaches.

Gakpo's last-gasp volley

In the second half, the Netherlands launched more vigorous attacks. Although the Dutch created multiple chances, they were denied a goal by Ter Stegen's superb goalkeeping.

Germany also had opportunities to extend their lead through counter-attacks. However, the plan to hold onto the 1-0 lead until the end of the match did not succeed.

In the second minute of stoppage time, substitute Ruben van Bommel delivered a superb cross into the box. Cody Gakpo met it with a magnificent volley, sending the ball into the net. Amsterdam erupted in celebration instantly.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw thanks to Gakpo's goal. Consequently, both Klopp and Xavi began their tenures as national team coaches with a draw.

Klopp’s ‘Two-Squad’ Plan

Klopp adopted an unconventional strategy for this international break. He divided a total of 44 players into two separate squads for the first four matches. The aim was to provide opportunities to more players and alleviate the physical strain caused by a hectic schedule.

In the first phase of this plan in Amsterdam, Germany fielded a side featuring several new combinations. However, a last-gasp goal denied them the victory.

On the other hand, Xavi’s Netherlands were ultimately rewarded for their attacking style of play. After failing to score despite creating chances for much of the match, they secured at least a point through Gakpo’s late strike.
