Brazil Begin New Era Against Australia After World Cup Disappointment

Brazil begin a new chapter after their disappointing 2026 World Cup campaign when they face Australia in the first match of a two-game friendly series on Saturday.

The match will kick off at 4:00pm Bangladesh time in Townsville, marking the first appearance for both teams since their early exits from the World Cup.

Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has made significant changes to his squad following the tournament. Only nine players from the World Cup squad have retained their places in the 26-man group selected for the Australia trip, while 10 players are in line to make their international debuts.

Ancelotti has also kept several experienced stars in the squad, including Vinicius Junior, Raphinha, Bruno Guimaraes, Gabriel Magalhaes and Marquinhos.

Guimaraes backs Brazil’s new generation

Bruno Guimaraes welcomed the arrival of new players and highlighted the depth of talent available in Brazilian football.

“New talents are constantly emerging in our country. It is important to have a strong foundation that allows the coach to give opportunities to young players,” the midfielder said.

Guimaraes also stressed the importance of a positive performance against Australia.

“We have great respect for Australia. Hopefully it will be a great battle. Things haven’t been going well for us recently, but I believe playing good football and winning matches is the best way to get out of this situation,” he said.

Ancelotti names his starting XI

Ancelotti has already confirmed his starting lineup for the opening match.

Hugo Souza, who has just one previous international appearance, will start in goal. Mateuzinho, Marquinhos, Vitor Reis and Douglas Santos are expected to form the defence, while Danilo Santos and Bruno Guimaraes will operate in midfield.

Raphinha, Estevao, Endrick and Vinicius Junior will lead the attack.

The lineup combines established international players with several members of Brazil’s emerging generation as Ancelotti begins reshaping the squad.

Australia also make major changes

Australia have also made significant changes under head coach Tony Popovic. Ten members of their World Cup squad have been left out, including experienced goalkeeper and captain Mat Ryan.

Both teams are looking to move forward after disappointing World Cup campaigns. Australia were eliminated in the round of 32, while five-time world champions Brazil exited in the last 16 after losing to Norway.

The second and final match of the friendly series will be played in Brisbane next Tuesday, giving both managers another opportunity to assess their squads and new players.
