Sustaining an injury while attempting a catch is nothing new in cricket. However, getting injured while trying to take a catch during a promotional shoot—rather than an actual match—is undoubtedly unusual. New Zealand all-rounder Rachin Ravindra has fallen victim to just such an unexpected accident.

Rachin was injured while diving to take a catch during a promotional shoot in Auckland. After securing the catch, he landed awkwardly on a safety mat, resulting in a dislocated right shoulder.

Initial examinations have not revealed any major complications. However, New Zealand Cricket cannot yet confirm the exact timeframe for his recovery. A clearer idea regarding his potential return to the field will emerge only after monitoring his progress during the initial weeks of rehabilitation.

Will Rachin be available for the series against India?

With Rachin's injury, the biggest question now concerns the upcoming T20 series against India. New Zealand is set to begin a five-match T20 series against India at home on October 22. The squad for this series is expected to be announced next week.

New Zealand’s Performance Manager, Mike Sandle, described the incident as unfortunate.

He said, "It is a very unfortunate incident. We are disappointed. Our main focus now is ensuring he recovers well and returns to the field as soon as possible."

New Zealand's stance on safety

Sandle also addressed the safety measures in place for the promotional shoot. He stated that all commercial shoots involving players are planned in advance with the consent of all parties involved. He confirmed that necessary safety measures were in place for Rachin's shoot as well.

Sandle said, "All commercial shoots involving our players are arranged beforehand with the agreement of everyone involved. Appropriate safety measures were in place for this instance too. It was somewhat of an unexpected accident. We will review our processes for such events in the future."

Coach unwilling to risk a hasty return

New Zealand head coach Rob Walter does not want to take any risks by rushing Rachin back from his injury. New Zealand faces a busy Test schedule over the next six months; therefore, he is not in favor of rushing Rachin back to the field before he has fully recovered.

Walter said, "We have a busy Test schedule ahead over the next six months. So, there is no rush to bring Ravindra back before it is necessary. I hope to welcome him back to the team soon."

The five-match T20 series against India concludes on November 1. Following that, the two teams are set to play five ODIs and two Tests, with both series scheduled for November. Consequently, Rachin's fitness has become crucial—not only for the T20 series against India but also for the extensive international schedule that lies ahead.
